Maytag Pet Pro Washer & Dryer

Maytag just released a new washer and dryer that has the ability to eliminate pet hair from clothes. The agitator is modified on this washer and has a removable filter in the center. Seems like they got the idea from their vintage washers. They currently aren’t available in stores yet, however, you can pre-order the set from maytag.com

Everything Old Is New Again!

Maytag long had detergent/lint filter that were in center of agitator, this goes back to "Powerfin" days if not earlier.

Looks like what Whirlpool has done is reinvented the wheel so to speak.

"With the Pet Pro washer, Utley explained that customers can select the Pet Pro option to any wash cycle. The cycle employs increased water levels to help lift pet hair off clothes and pass through a built-in pet hair filter. Utley said tests showed the Pet Pro filter removed five times more pet hair from clothes versus traditional Maytag washing machines."

What they're saying in essence is this newfangled top loader washer will use higher water levels to lift and float pet hair/dander off laundry. Once that is done much or most will then be caught in filter as water circulates.

Again this is not anything new. Maytag's washers with lint filters in agitator worked best at high water levels. Have a few for my Maytag wringer and works rather well.

Tumble dryers usually always are good at removing lint, and this Maytag "pet" version has basically very long "Air Fluff" cycle in aid of that process.

Marketing propaganda can sure be entertaining at times aka bullshit to the extreme.

At first glance, I'm not impressed. The washer filter media looks coarse with very limited surface area. They pawn the 55 year old dryer filter as some overly large redesigned contraption.

Not trying to negative, I would like to see the return of a well designed washer lint filter but I'm not sure this is up to par. Don't get rid of your real Maytag pitman trans/GE Filter Flo just yet.

A good friend of mine just sold his house in town left his GE front load set and bought his late grandmothers house. It’s a 2015 speed queen and he says it washes out all pet hair like crazy! He said, he upgraded big time!
I agree, it’s a joke with all their marketing.

Pet Pro

After using a Maytag HE TL recently to wash 2 very dirty blankets covered in dog hair, I will tell you that the machine didn't do a damned thing to remove the hair. Of course, the blankets struggled to move, and I suspect wouldn't be too much better with a higher water level due to the anemic wash action. Based off of the design, I am not too sure it will even work all that well anyways. Personally, I would rather have much larger drain holes in the tub. My Duet did a fantastic job removing hair, whereas my LG/Kenmore and the GE we are using now don't, because of the size difference in drain holes. You can tell a huge difference by how much hair the dryer collects, and how much hair is left in the seal or door.

It is also concerning to read their claim of "removes 5X more pet hair" and to then read a footnote stating "Comparing Normal cycle with Pet Pro Filter and option to cycle using traditional agitator without Pet Pro Filter and option. Results will vary based on fabric and type of pet hair." While vague, it could also be one of their machines with the 'PowerWash' agitator, which is exactly what I used on the pet blankets. That 5X claim wouldn't be all that hard to beat in my experience.

It looks like the agitator is a totally different design from maytag's typical he washplate design, it looks like it has bigger fins and 4 of them,i wonder if turnover will be any better, we all know turnover is not great with the whirltag 3 fin design.

Nevermind, i saw another picture, it only has 3 fins, but they are bigger than other washplate designs. I wonder if they will put a lint filter in the maytag commercial washer.

I doubt they'll put the filter in the commercial washer. I think the commercial and pet hair washers are targeted towards different niches, and I'm not convinced it's much more than just another marketing gimmick.

I also don't think the other manufacturers are going to rush out and change up their lineup to compete with them, unless they end up being much more successful than I expect.

What will GE do to compete with Maytag? I hope they do the filter-flo with the more efficient pump with the recirculating pump flume at the 10:00 or 2:00 position. It will run during agitation during wash and rinse.

GEs answer to Maytag pet care

Maybe GE will ship their washers with a pet brush that owners can use for a minute everyday to remove loose fur before it gets on clothes. Usually enjoyable for the pet too, and more bonding time with their owners. And maybe they'll add one of those felt or sticky things you rub on your clothes to remove the fur that does get on them before washing.

Other than that, I'm still not sure that GE will see the need to immediately go out and retool to compete with Maytag.

But we'll see what happens in the future, every company is looking for a gimmick, and they may even come up with something worthwhile, even if it isn't specifically marketed toward pet owners, and even if it is just reinventing the wheel.
