So, I guess the $64,000 question is how does it reduce water use to get that Energy Star rating? Is a portion of the wash water retained for the rinse ala Speed Queen? A very low water level for the rinse? Low water levels for both wash and rinse?

Interesting that we don't see impeller-based top-loaders being used in commercial applications. Gee...I wonder why not?

Resource Saver?

Maybe you get a series of spin sprays unless you pay extra for a deep rinse...

Andrew, in fact the diagram was taken from a page for the equivalent Whirlpool MAT14PDAWW, 2.5 Cu. Ft., Energy Advantage Top Load Commercial Washer. Seems like some sort of a general view of machines similar to it.

Eugene & Malcolm, the washer I have used quite a lot is the Maytag shown above. Strangely it does not seem to behave like any Energy Star at all, since a 'normal wash', ex.: fabrics settings @ 'colors', takes 2 full loads of water. 1st load is warm water, then spray rinse + spin. 2nd load, cold water for brief wash + rinse and final spin. Another thing is that these models of washers are relatively noisy, above all during the 'wash' cycles. The rotations of the agitator emit a sort of 'tawk, tawk, tawk' noise. Not only 'our' washer but every washer of that model I've encountered so far. Curious. Would have thought great companies like Whirlpool (Maytag brand) could do better. That being said, the results are very good, dirty clothes get really clean and the large size tub allows one to wash bed sheets, jeans, etc., without problem, provided the machine is not overloaded (typical whole wash process takes about 26 min.)

That is actually a beltless direct drive washer. Your pic of a two belt didnt make sense when the model number was in my head. A good washer and goodness knows there are a ton of them out there in commercial service...

Wash Water for Rinse?

Hold on, how ever on earth does that work?

 

You can't use sudsy water to rinse out the clothes, when it is detergent and dirt laden, can you?! Thats a joke, if I ever heard one...

New WP Commercial Washer

Andy where have you been, this is the new dual motor, dual belt, dual transmission WP Commercial Design, it even has a Power-Fin Agitator with center pullout lint filter, LOL.

 

I really do not know anything about this washer but I suspect that it is just a DD WP washer.

 

As Malcolm mentioned WP has many patents on very effective spin rinsing systems like used on the Resource-Saver washers of the late 1990s. The six recirculated spin spray rinse system rinsed much better than one deep rinse while using less than 1/2 the water and it automatically used the correct amount for the size and absorbancy of the load being rinsed. I truly wish Speed Queen could use some of this technology to save their top loading washers from extinction.
