McIntosh

I remember drooling over those systems at a local audio store. It was hooked to a high end turntable and a pair of Paradigm speakers and OMG, the sounds that came out of that thing. But $7,000 for the system? Out of budget.

So I bought a Sony ES 5.1 reciever and a set of Boston Acoustics bookshelf speakers. Of course, that was pre-Katrina. Now I have a cheaper $200 Sony receiver with cheap speakers. They sound fairly good for a cheap system and you can hear the surround effects and every thing. You can definitely hear Harry flying in from behind on his broomstick.

McIntosh amps are very nice and superbly built, but I think they are a bit over priced for what they are. I do like the old McIntosh tube amps though, their simplicity really makes them sound good. I'm more of a Crown Audio person myself when it comes to solid state electronics though. Crown's DC 150 and 300 series are their classic models. They have a sound very similar to a Mac. The sound of their AB+B grounded bridge setup is just as smooth and clean, but I think it has a little bit better clarity in the bass. The kick drums seem to have the most natural sound on a Crown...not fat and distorted the way many lower end amps do. I gotta say though that McIntosh amps probably have it over the Crowns when it comes to fit & finish. Crown amps are really made to be hid in a back closet, where the McIntosh amps are made to sit out front and be as attractive as the rest of the furniture in the room (if not more). I bought a set of ComTech 800 (400 watts per channel at 4 ohms) Crown amps from Tower Music when they closed up. Despite their insane power rating, they play just as clean and nice at low volumes as they do blowing the roof off the house with good music or a movie! They are just ugly as sin (unless you know what you are looking at!)

Here's an old DC 300 amp (150 watts per channel) Very understated in it's appearance to say the least! Sort of the "old pickup truck" of the audio world

I am auctioning these amps for a friend of mine who designs/installs media rooms from $100K and up. These amps came from an installation where they were built into a wall behind a glass wall.
The guy decided to demolish that room and put in a home theater. Complete with step leveled theater seats, motorized screen curtains and all. Believe it or not he was going to throw away these amps in the garbage! One of those who has more money than sense. My freind asked if he could have them and he gave him the entire system! Preamp, Magnaplanar speakers and all!
I fussed and fiddled with the camera to get good photos, I finally drug out the 35mm to take these. I still think they could be better.
How do you like my "boiler plate" in the auction?

I'm with Tolivac here...He could have used those amps in the new home theater setup. Each amp is a 2 channel amp...that's 2 matched channels for LF, RF, LR, and RR. He would have just needeed two more amps for the center and the sub channels, and since Mac amps haven't changed considerably in design, new models would have worked great. Some people have more money than brains...I couldn't believe they were headed for the trash! That was probably a pretty awesome sounding setup....Macs with Maggie speakers!

I didn't notice that was your E-bay screen name. You ought to bargain with him and see if he'll let you keep the system on loan for a few months!

Crown sound-I don't really look at Crown amps as "Hi-Fi" so much they work for that but feel others are better-Have used Crowns in MANY radio stations as monitor amps-and where I work now.Crowns seem to have a harsh gritty sound-not smooth like "Macs" tubed or solid state.Years ago-must have been early 70's there was a Hi-fi store called "McGuires" in Bethesda-near Wash DC-that had a McIntosh system that consisted of a C28 preamp and a pair of MC3500 Tubed 350W power amps feeding a pair of McIntosh speakers-the speakers were actually Bozak-Mac took over them. The system sounded so lushes-any music played thru it sounded to real to life-would love tha system today.Since I didn't have the 12 grand to spend on that bought a used Scott LK48 intergrated tube amp was in heaven!sounded beautiful thru a pair of Philips speakers in Karilson cabinets.Used that at my Moms house and then the system followed me to college.then back home again. Then got lost in a flood.Would love another Scott LK amp. They were nice and powerful for their size-tremendous bass response for an amp that had miniature 7189 tubes for each channel(push pull pair)was rated 24W per channel.but sounded much more than that.the Scott had the LARGEST output transformers of amp of that power.that gave it solid bass repsonse and firm sound.also the highs were so clean. No grittyness.I also can't belive that seller was going to THROW AWAY that Hi-Fi system of the McIntosh amp and Magneplaner speakers-What a Nut!Glad they were rescued-that would have been sad for those to go to the krusher! If nothing else bet the trashman would be fighting over what trash guy gets what!

The company that my friend who acquired these amps for is a full service media company. When you buy a system from them, you get a interior designer, a construction crew(in case any walls need to be moved), an electrician, a dedicated electronics guy to help you select the proper balance of components (brand name and model).
Most of the media rooms they install top $100K in price. What is really surprising is that when it comes time to select the electronics, most of the people don't care what they get. Usually the answer is "I don't care what it is or what it costs, it HAS to look GOOD and be very impressive!" Oh, and also "send the bill to my accountant" is commonly heard as well.
It's all about the looks. Image. I was always told that if you have to worry about your image...you don't have one!

Geez-I can choose and install my own audio-video components-don't need the interior designer, electrician, electgronics guy, etc.Just sell me the gear and I can take care of the rest-guess I have no "image" other than what I get on the TV.Yes I have installed and FIXED "Mac" gear.
