I've been reading the posts since I googled "older maytag for sale" back in 2010 and RevvinKevins's post for an 806 popped up. He was 3 miles away. The 806 is still going strong, thank you Kevin! Moms had the dampers replaced, it purrs now, as she doesn't trust me with repairs. 5 years later these popped up on CL. belonged to an older man who passed away and the son was clearing his stuff out...1 owner! I couldn't resist! The son said they were from 1969, but wouldn't they have the blue trim instead of sunglow? The washer has the normal and large water level settings not large/extra large.

Washer serial# 206771HU needs glide/roller kit, sluggish on agitation. I took off the panel and pushed on the motor and it agitated normally. Other than that it's quiet. I gave it the damper test by moving the agitator around and it's smooth...learned that from aw.org!
Dryer serial#646199KD, has a ripped lint trap, new one's on its way from repairclinic. Door seal looks new! It does seem to take a little longer to dry than our old dryer, which dried a load in about 35 mins, and the bell sounds "muffled" but that's ok I guess.
One more thing, the guy said the washer's tub light burned out, but I noticed the lid switch doesn't work either, so do I need to replace the lid switch to make the tub light work?

I think you are right, if they are from 1969, they should be "aqua" blue on the lower control panel. And I think the all metal ringer knob too. And another thing, the "sunglow" gold lower control panel on the dryer should have the 4 buttons to the right side of the control knob; low temp, regular temp, normal dryness, extra dryness.
So I'm thinking maybe the lower control panels might have been painted?
Is this a big door dryer (stream of heat), or small door dryer (halo of heat)??
I'm curious to know.
But either way, congratulations on your vintage brown maytag set. They are BEAUTIFUL!!!
I'm guessing the dryer model is probably a DG806?

I never expected to come across these, let alone in such mint condition. I'm not a huge fan of the "cordoba copper", but we can live with it. Recently we had been noticing tiny holes in our clothes, so I started browsing CL just to see what kind of deal I could get. Sure enough, keyword "older maytag " produced these! After reading all your threads over the years and learning about these machines, I knew they were gems.

Yes h.doll the dryer has the small door, so I believe it is a HOH, with the standing pilot light, no dryness buttons

Nice finds!  The washer would date from September 1969, and the dryer from February 1970.  I wouldn't be surprised if a dealer swapped the panels from another set at some point as they have the later 1975-1980 dials and crystal knobs.

The 806 dryers didn't have any buttons, and that was the beauty of them.  Easiest dryer I've ever used.  Turn the knob/dial (if necessary), push, and go.

 

I was surprised to read that your DG806 seems to take longer to dry a load.  My experience was the opposite.  We had a lower model DEx06 and it took forever to get the job done.  When we moved to a house without 240V in the laundry area, we had to get a gas dryer.  We found a DG806 and were amazed at how quickly it got things done.  Easily half the time to do a load of towels compared to the electric one.

 

That DG806 was by far the quietest, most efficient, and best dryer I've ever owned.  I wish I had known about this site when its bearings went bad.

Slow HOH dryer

I wonder if the felt seal is okay?  Our DE806 was a speed-demon, too, once I replaced the front felt seal that had disintegrated and fallen into the element.

 

Don't forget to follow the lubrication regimen for the dryer.  We had a couple of HOH units that fell to a squalling bearing due to failure to keep it lubricated as recommended.

Hopefully you will get some good use out of them.

 

I would bet that someone repainted the lower part of the control panels the later gold color. This could be because the orignal blue paint was failing or because they liked the later gold color better. I think the later gold color looks much better on Copper-Tone and the Harvest Gold machines, I liked the blue color better on the white and Avocado machines.

 

Maytag HOH gas dryers can be fairly slow in drying speed if everything is not perfect, this means all dryer seals in perfect shape and a good short vent system. You can tell if something is not right by watching the gas burner operation, if you put a large load of damp clothing in to dry the gas burner should NEVER cycle off until the load is nearly dry and the exhaust temperature is around 150F, if it is cycling before this happens you have air-flow problems.

update

My wife is off weekends and tends to have our family of five's laundry going the whole time, so I know she's going to put them to the test this weekend. She's a little weary of these 45 year old machines and kind of gave me a disapproving glance when I showed up with them. I want them to perform so I had Long Beach Maytag out here to troubleshoot the slow spin/agitation, he adjusted the pump's position and put new belts on it, which seemed to help. I think the clothes hadn't been spun out fast enough, causing the longer drying time. I spotted the turbine oil in his toolbag and had him squirt some in the pump! let's hope they pass the test and are allowed to stay! Thank you again aw members for giving your wealth of knowledge in the threads, such as bleeding the gas line before lighting the pilot, I would have never thought of that!

Keeping my fingers crossed for you that your wife has the maytags working smoothly for her this coming weekend while she's washing the family's laundry!!
I hope your wife will be pleasantly surprised at their great performance abilities.

Keep us posted on whether the wife decides if the maytags will be staying or if they have to go. Hoping she'll be as enthusiastic about them as you are, after she's used them.
