Question:

Have any of the Miele North American Customers had any communication with Miele about purchasing additional Mastercare Cycles for their machines? Was wondering about two programs called 'Sluice' and 'Kitchen Linens' which are available on the professional machines.

What do you suppose it would take to add additional cycles to the machines?

Little Giant

The Little Giant machine has the Sluice cycle which looks like it was meant to handle very heavily soiled laundry. Wondered if it was available for purchase on other model machines.

Additional programmes

Hi Malcolm,

I have recently purchased a W 5965 WPS SteamCare and it's fantastic. I have added some more programme packages to it. It already comes with Home XL and Eco packages as standard, but I added the Hygiene and Kids as well as the Baby packages as they have more rinses in the programmes. The Baby package also has a Nappies (Diapers) programme, never used it though, but uses nearly 100 litres to wash 5 kg of Diapers or anything that needs that type of wash.

I would think if one has a Miele 4840/ 4842 washer one could update since it has the screen to get into the MasterCare cycles. My 4800 would need a new control panel and I can only imagine how much they would want to come into your home just to "update" the machine. If its running right I am not going to bother updating. Now my dishwasher on the other hand I might consider it.

NO

While the NA models may be able to be updated I bet you will not find Miele NA updating them.  Diffident mind set than the rest of the world because we folks in NA are different.

I thought I read somewhere that the sluice program was only available on gravity drain washers from Miele, not the pump ones, which I suppose would make sense if you don't want to send all that [ stuff ] through the pump. Somebody should double-check that however.

Little Giant

But the Little Giant machine has the sluice cycle and it is not a gravity drain machine.

Miele does not make program updates available for the NA market. The W4842, successor to the W4840, added a couple of new cycles yet W4840 owners were told by Miele that those new cycles would NOT be made available to previous generation model owners.

Miele advertises PC Update and buying additional programs after market in their marketing materials, but once you buy a machine there is no such thing. This is potential lawsuit material because Miele made a material misrepresentation in their marketing upon which consumers base their decisions.

Miele can make changes via their lap top but I don't know if this qualifies as an update.   I had a tech that decreased the moisture sensor setting by connecting his lap top to the PC area. This made the dryer run a few minutes longer while drying the clothes a bit more.

Still I don't think this is a real update in the sense that it is changing or adding programs.  The machines can do it because it can be done in other countries, but it seems that Miele NA doesn't want to do it.  Not too surprised though because this fits their past pattern of treating NA customers different.

Examples:

None of our dishwasher manuals state the water temp used, the water consumption,  or energy consumed by each program....but this information is provided to countries in Europe and elsewhere.

No programming instructions included in my W1986 washer manual.....found them in the W1986 manual released to Australia.

Miele

Perhaps Miele doesn't provide that information to the US Public because they don't have the infrastructure here to run around fixing machines that have been altered by Mrs. Jones...

What I don't quite understand is why Miele doesn't allow you that choice when their machines are designed to be flexible, updateable and in many cases, reprogrammable. It doesn't make sense why I can purchase a machine here, NZ, South Africa or Europe for example and get modifications or updates done to it and you can't.

I suppose that is one of the fallacies of purchasing a machine which is imported and made by a foreign company.

One of the reasons why I was considering buying the W4842 was because of the large number of programs it had and the flexibility it had to pretty much wash anything.

Then I realized that I really only ever use two cycles, regular and delicate.. and the rest was pretty much fluff. Our TOL GE top loader had 28 cycles, I think I only really used three of them regularly.

I think the idea of being able to program your own cycles is a very exciting prospect. If Miele can upload new programs to a machine, there's no reason why someone can't reverse engineer it and figure out how to make their own cycles, assuming that they have enough technical know-how.

It has nothing to do with the fact the machine is imported or the option to update wouldn't be offered in countries other than where it is made. I'd suggest that it is solely because Miele USA can't be bothered......

...or some other lame reason.

Oh I Can Think Of One Very Good Reason

Lawsuits.

No where else upon this earth do persons engage in legal action more than in the United States. If Miele allows certain programs and or gives customers carte blanche to alter same by most standards and law Miele can and will be held liable for any outcome, adverse or otherwise.

If a consumer is allowed to program the washer at will and then the unit or parts thereof are some how damaged you can bet 99.9% of them will claim Miele is to blame. Worse they'll find a judge and or jury to back them up. Remember this is a country where persons were awarded millions because coffee was served "hot" rather than just hot.
