Mieles terrible connectivity

Leave it to Miele to make connectivity so hard to use, and meaningless that few will bother and those that do can look forward to redoing it every app update.

Their wireless app just updated - now I have a to log in to use it - this means setting up the account and password ( painful affair on its own )

it also wiped the old connection settings - Its wireless is also way more difficult than anything I own -I'm hardly a Luddite - and I had to have my son (who is a video engineer by trade) over here and he said its the hardest home device hed ever seen to get working.

Since he gets to use it for free I had no problem pressing him into servitude the first time.

Miele's lost their minds if they think this is worth the effort they are imposing.

Connectivity

Everybody does it, so Miele has to do it as well.

Even though they actually were the first to do it: Miele@home was FAR beyond anything of its time in the early 2000s.
It used dedicated hardware you had to buy on top, verry complicated but from what I heard verry stable system.

Just look at how bad most run of the mil WiFi routers are on their own.

Now have an appliance company design that piece of networking hardware on top.
Failure is basicly certain for their first-gen version.

I don't know - just look at Dell and their 1397 WLAN mini-cards... hardly the most reliable adapters in the world. There are frequent complaints of users discovering that their adapter has decided to disable itself, requiring a reboot to get it going again. I experience this, and there is no rhyme nor reason for it.

I think wi-fi technology is still far too flaky.

As a matter of curiosity, can you just confirm what is is that the Miele App does? We also have Miele appliances, but have never seen the need for an app for the machines.

The whole world has gone app/ blue tooth crazy, as a matter of fact I have seen the Braun electric tooth brush the other day, and guess what it has blue tooth connectivity, I suppose it will give you the data of how long you are brushing your teeth, I don't know, is it really necessary?

IMHO the whole craze for connected appliances is a disaster waiting to happen. I've had some support/programming experience with some of the dreaded IoT (Internet of things) devices and even if they are new and/or "supported" they still have plenty of bugs, and there are plenty of cases of unsupported IoT devices being compromised. Plus, unless the hardware is high quality, placing all that additional hardware in a harsh environment like inside a washing machine, it is destined to fail early.

Worryingly for Miele according to user comments on UK Whitegoods, they now use sealed outer tubs as well.

My sister warned me about the updates on Windows 10. She told me NOT to accept any updates, just notifications, so you can check them out before accepting them.

What  do the Miele updates do, reduce the amount of water for each fill to where you are damp cleaning instead of washing and no longer getting the water temperature you selected?

I can tell you what the app had, not sure about the latest update

Status as to where a load is in a cycle and estimate of remaining time
What load options you selected
KWH-current load only -no cumulative
Water use - per load only- no cumulative
twindos 1&2 remaining %

No other app I've used completely erases the connection settings and passwords between updates.

Tomturbomatic - no the app doesn't alter water levels from what I can tell.

One thing I forgot above was it allows you to update the firmware on the machine as well.

I did that was well but noticed no differences as I hadn't enough time on it prior.

I found it does not alter the setting as you select them but merely notifies you of what they are.

There is a high degree of control over the machine as is with water levels extra rinses, etc...Im picky about the right amount of water and I'm not disappointed.

No sealed bearings on my W1

You don't need to disassemble the tub to change the bearings. Its worse. You have to remove a giant cast iron support cross.

Internet connectivity sucks.

Had to connect MIL's new printer to the WIFI.
Horrible and it required a cable.....

The button on the wifi box (WPS?) never works and tyring to enter the 25 digit key into a printer which has 4 buttons.

Don't believe in internet connected appliances.
They can order more detergent when stocks get low but who will benefit from that feature?

But I must say it seems unnecessary, point being what will you do with said information. If the wash load is almost half way, and your at the office what good will it do you?

In my humble opinion it seem gimmicky,it won't help you do the washing faster, it seem to be the same as the touch screen craze everything is going through these days, why the button did the job just as well, and as with BMW's gesture control, can it be more comfortable to just turn the knob or press a button?

We live in a world where a lot of people don't give a flying crap about build integrity, they just want something to be thrilled by for the next few days and to show off to their friends, until the next best thing comes along. That is why a lot more working class people, like myself, will be in debt, perpetually trying to obtain the next best thing and once we have it the goal posts have already been moved on.

Sad state of affairs.

Miele literally always had its bearings in a cast iron support cross on the back of the drum.
You always had to take the tub out, remove the bolts holding the cross to the tub and then work on the cross.
This actually makes it a verry comfortable bearing change as the cross is heavy and won't readily move when you are knocking the bearings out and the part you are working on is easily managable because of its relativley small size compared to an entire tub half.

Touchscreens are actually cheaper now in a lot of cases then physical buttons. That's why even most knob and button UIs use touch sensitive areas instead of physical switches.

And connectivity can be nice to have. Let's say you don't enjoy running to the laundry room like we do. You just check your phone.
Or even better: You don't even bother until your machine alerts you via your phone.
Let's say there is a leak and you are at work. Your washer will notify you of the fault and you could save a ton of money in water damage repairs.
Let's say you're out shopping and want to know whether you need more softner or not. Just check your phone.

Sure it's a feature and one that only few will ever sucessfully use ontop of that.
But if it sucks, don't use it. The washer will perform 100% the same.

Going this route of "oh it's so unnecessary" would have kept us in the twin tub area.
You don't need recirculation systems.
You don't need internal heaters.
You don't even need a washer.

Rocks and rivers weren't WiFi devices and they cleaned laundry just fine

Personally, I've always found them to be rather 'touch-and-go' in responsiveness. Ordinary rotary selector switches and option buttons offer a much better - a more positive - user experience.

Some machines should just stay with knobs,dials, and switches.Just easier to use.Get rid of those touch screen things in cars----PLEASE-again knobs,dials,switches are better in cars esp for the radio and AC-heat system.the touch screen is OK for navigation systems.But NOT for the radio or HVAC.

I applaud the inclusion of connectivity - even if it simply mirrors the machines and gives a status update.

More info would be better, cumulative resource consumption would be cool - I can put a KWH number to it but knowing exactly how much water I use would be nice - it knows per load how much and a simple counter cant be hard.

What sucks is breaking convention with how an app should update requiring a new router path be established - combine that with the fact that the machine "looks" like a printer and is difficult to setup - that makes its frustrating to own.

It Works Fine

The Miele app works fine. I had zero problems setting it up. I used the iPhone app. There are TWO ways you can set it up. The first is WPS. You push the WPS button on your wifi router (if it has support for WPS) and then on the washer you select WPS option and ok. After that it is setup.

The second option, which I used, uses the app on the phone to set it up. One the washer you use the NON-WPS option. When that is selected the washer shows up as a wifi network on your phone. You connect to it and use the washer serial number as the password. Once connected then launch the Miele app and choose connect. It will then ask you to supply the SSID and passeword for your home wifi network. Put those in and then the washer will join the network.

Finally you created a Miele account. It's simple. Put in your e-mail addres, pick a password and then enter your physical address and phone. Once that is done you can then add your washer. Go to More->Settings>Add Appliance. You pick the category (Washing Machine, Oven, etc.), then pick the model or choose not listed, finally enter the serial number.

Once that is done you will see your washer listed under appliances. You can click it and see all of the options. If it is running you will see where it is in the cycle, how much water has been used so far, the program that is running, detergent drawer, etc. If a cycle is not running you can select the program add options, etc.

I personally like the alerts option. It beeps the phone when a cycle is done. This is how I keep track of if/when the kids started laundry, etc. I personally like the app.

As others have stated I would like to see a cycle history screen along with cumulative water and power use.

Tom, is there a trick to switching Windows 10 updates to notifications?  I was doing this for Windows 7, but was under the impression that it wasn't possible with 10.
