Wow, a twin or double size Chenille bedspread for only $4.98 in 1959! Today you can’t even buy a box of Tide to wash that bedspread for $4.98! But then the min. wage was only $1.00, which in todays dollars equals $9.65.
Speaking of chennille bedspreads. On Hwy 101, just south of Petaluma, Calif. there used to be an old shack like house right next to the freeway until the late 70’s, called “The House of Chennile” and they always had a colorful chennile bedspread flying in front on a clothes line with a sign that said, “spreads $40.00”.
This was when I was still doing hair for a living and I was in my early 20’s. One day I was talking to a customer about this while I was doing her comb-out. I said to her, “I can’t believe anyone would pay $40.00 for one of those ratty bedspreads”, to which she replied, “I don’t think those are the kind of “spreads” they are selling in that shack!” That’s when I learned that “House of Chenille” was really a house of ill repute! Ya learn something new everyday.
