Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

Even Breville will conk out after a while. I had the temerity to clean the inside of our convection toaster oven with Easy-Off. Nope, the metal is evidently aluminized, and you know what lye does to aluminum. And the fan bearings are getting noisy. Now, we use it a good bit, still, they're $350 compared to $35 for an Oster. I doubt you'll get 10 Oster lifetimes out of the Breville, though they do look nicer. And I wouldn't spend $500 for a new commercial Sharp MWO, but I would buy a used one that hasn't been used too hard. Probably get one for less than half the price of new, better still if you don't have to deal with a used Commercial Appliance dealer.

In all honesty if I had to choose between this:

and this:

I would choose the Sharp. The Breville as nothing more than a standard junky residential microwave with fancy electronics, sleek outward appearance and soft close door while the Sharp is more robust and still has a whisper close door.

Because the Sharp heats MUCH more evenly on high power than the Breville, there is no need for fancy power levels, inverters and sensor functions.

What is your Sharp Carousel like? Frame, wave guide, transformer, ect?

My understanding is the Sharp Commercial has a few distinct differences compared to a standard Sharp sold today:

Larger power transformer, Stainless steal frame on the thicker side, direct cavity exhaust vent, bottom microwave energy feed, more even cooking, NSF certification, slightly more robust magnetron and fan, precision wound parts, squeeze door handle for whisper close.

However I am curious where your vintage Sharp carousel stands in all of this.
Of course the transformer and magnatron is going to be different depending on it's wattage output, so that's a moot point.
And yes, my Sharp has cavity exhaust and a substantial high velocity fan motor, all fumes and heat are channeled out through the magnatron's cooling fins.
Finally, indeed it has certifications listed, since it's mandatory for such an appliance.
As for distinct differences you mentioned, I don't see much difference which would indicate any reason for a major cost justification.
As I mentioned, I've checked out the schematics for both machines and they're pretty much identical in layout.

I've serviced microwaves at the repair shop, all types, including over-the-stove models, so I have some experience with them.

Right, however per any watt of power there is a level of efficiency and drive.

Is your model NSF listed? I know it would be UL listed, ect.

Right, however having an NSF listing makes for easier cleaning.

I am genuinely curious how your Sharp is built. You might be right about your Sharp using the same gauge steel and parts as a commercial model. To which I would say you scored yet again.
As I know it, the commercial appliances are rated differently due to the fact that they are used in "public" areas like convenience stores, by many many people, some who are abusive and/or slobs.
Plus they have to endure a lot more use, wear and tear.
So requirements have to be tighter, more strict, and yes germ-free for health reasons.
Which reminds me...... I need to do a cleaning of mine for some splatters. 😮

And about a 50% duty factor over a 24 hour course vs a few minutes out of every 24 hours in home use.

I can't speak for your Sharp, however, most genuine Commerical units like Amana and Panasonic are built sturdier than their residential counter parts and are priced accordingly. Perhaps not the build quality of a 1980s Litton or Kenmore, but still a tad beefier than your domestic stereotype.

Remember, Sharp makes a $335 unit which is still cheaper than a medium sized Breville and many high end residential units if seeking quality for the lowest price.

I've used my Sharp oven DAILY for 22 years now.
In fact, it's used multiple times a day.
So if you figure only a once-a-day use, 365 days X 22 years comes out to over 8,000 uses.

Right, but that still isn't the same as running continuously for hours on end like in a gas station or convenience store.

However I do believe you, old residential microwaves, especially names like Sharp kept going for decades.

Do you have pictures of the inside cavity and back?

Look into duty cycles.

A 1000 watt transformer that is designed to run 5 minutes will be smaller than a 1000 watt transformer designed to run continuously.

I think that is the point people miss that I am trying to make.

Microwave, oven quality, and performance

Oh my Chet, here you go again, so many ridiculous statements about residential and so-called commercial microwave ovens.

First of all GE has not discontinued all parts for a 15 year old over the range microwave oven. This is such a popular product even if there’s a part discontinued you can easily find it on eBay, etc. to repair it if you’d like.

There’s no major difference between your so-called sharp commercial hundred dollar Chinese made microwave than just about any other microwave oven or over the range. Microwave oven available today.

A turntable always makes a microwave oven and cook more evenly. No decent microwave does not have a turntable.

There is no difference in the clean ability of different microwave ovens, it’s absolutely disgusting that you would have that GE over the range microwave oven in your house and leave it that dirty. It starts to become a fire hazard you know.

The only microwave ovens that cooked more gently are the ones that varied the magnetron power rather than pulsing and on and off as all microwave ovens due today.

The early GE countertop ovens would actually vary the output power at three different levels and the Thermidor wall ovens have either three or five different power levels the magnetron puts out consistently, but it’s more expensive to build a microwave this way so it’s really not done anymore. They vary the output power of the magnetron with a huge power dropping resistor, which is tapped at different points to get the different power outputs desired..

Last night we had 10 guests here for New Year’s Eve, we cooked a huge amount of seafood vegetables, etc. I ended up using all three microwave ovens at times and all three Thermidor ovens. The fun cleanup came later we used both whirlpool dishwashers and once again I brought in the KitchenAid top loading portable dishwasher for the big pots and pans, serving trays, etc..

The three microwave ovens, the 2002 GE countertop oven gets the bulk of the work it’s powerful and fast with the turntable and cooks very evenly, the 1974 Amana radar range works very well but it only cooks at 720 W and there’s no turntable , it is a solid performer and of course my favorite is the Thermidor Thermatronic 700 W of cooking power at five different power levels combined with a full-size self cleaning oven. These really large micro thermal ovens generally cook very evenly because of the large oven cavity size which really allows the microwave energy to bounce around and be absorbed evenly, and the best part is the whole thing is self-cleaning so I seldom cover food in these ovens.

John again, you refuse to listen calling me ridiculous while not knowing even the most basic facts about my Microwave.

For the hundredth time, my Microwave is not Chinese. It was made in Thailand and based on US design.

The control board and membrane can not be ordered new.

Except my Microwave has absolutely nothing to do with China.

A turntable always makes a microwave oven and cook more evenly. No decent microwave does not have a turntable.

My Sharp without a turntable cooks 1000 times more evenly than my GE with a turn table. I know because I have first hand experience and so do my taste buds.

So you are telling me with a straight face NSF certifications are just empty feel good words?

it’s absolutely disgusting that you would have that GE over the range microwave oven in your house and leave it that dirty. It starts to become a fire hazard you know.

I can't cook or warm food in my GE over the range unit without it exploding. The rotating turntable has a tendency to pull paper towels off the dishware causing the uncovered splatter to go everywhere.

The only microwave ovens that cooked more gently with the ones that varied the magnetron power rather than pulsing and on and off as all microwave ovens due today.

My Sharp does a better job defrosting and melting butter on high than my GE does on any power level.

With true even heating the need for variable power goes down.

Variable power predominantly exists to masks uneven microwave distribution caused by poor oven design.

Try a modern Amana JET19. (y)

I mentioned that it looks pretty much like that dirty GE photo that you posted.

If the cabinet is of the same thickness and white on steal, than my Sharp definitely would have good reason for being proceed higher.

However I say if, because while I can compare a modern commercial Sharp to a modern residential Sharp I haven't physically seen your oven to compare.

With that said I am happy that you are Sharp has proven itself as a good oven.
