More info on 1-18 lint filters

Hi all :-D

My 1-18 model WC has one of the fantastic (substitute any other word that starts with 'F') bed-of-nails lint filter, which--after use--becomes the bed-of-lint nails filter.

Mine's a replacement--it's all white, and I suspect by the bent cones that the original went for a swim at some point.

I was wondering, though--JimmyB brought it up first, and then Chris' post reminded me again of it--what's the deal with the different filter designs? I take it you need a different tub guard with a different rail system to make the alternate design (not bed-of-nails) work with it?

I'd sure love to ditch the bed-of-nails that came with mine, because after successive whackings to dislodge the lint, it finally gave up the ghost and shattered the front.

I was hoping to find something less whackable--and darn it, the Filter-Flo pan doesn't stay on the agitator :-D

Yes be careful. Whacking it too hard can cause damage!

Yes those filters are kind of apita.
If you wet them before wacking against the heel of your paw
the lint tends to dislodge more easily. Also if you periodically tooth brush them with dish washing liquid,
especially if you're using fabric softener regularly,
they tend to be less lint clingy. After a few whacks against the heel of my hand, I rinse the leftovers into the kitchen
sink.

Yes, I usually thwack the filter when it's wet--otherwise, if it's dry, you might as well be carding wool.

But mine got so bad that it really has to be cleaned with a toothbrush and soap after every four washings or so--I think the nails are just gaktastic and very grabby as a result.

It's a superb filter, but I think the Jet-Flow cartridge itself should have been disposable.

I'd heard that the alternate design is more of a modified hanging pan, a la Westinghouse top-loaders, and if that's true, I'd give my eyeteeth to get ahold of one of those instead...

The truth is, there is no ideal solution to the 1-18 lint filter issues. The B-O-N type filters OK and is hard to clean but the pan type filter is just as aggravating. All the little holes fill up with lint very quickly and then the recirc. water is just run over the top without being filtered.

Wish I saved my Mom's

Mom's 1-18 was replaced in the early/mid 90's with a Kitchenaid, I should have hung on to the dispensers, cap and filter. I think She got the 1-18 in 1978 when I was in 3rd grade. As I remember it was more of a filter pan as you stated Nate and the tab to lock it in was on the tub guard but cannot be sure of it. Good luck on the hunt to change out the bed-of-nails.

Thanks Jim--no worries--there are a lot of things I wish I'd held onto over the years too! It's the wistful part of this hobby

I guess I'll stick to the bed-of-nails filter and just nab another one, then...
