I must be the unluckiest person on the planet when it comes to washer malfunction.

My Whirlpool washer, model number WTW4816FW3, is having an issue where it won't advance to spin after draining is complete on the rinse cycle. This has happened on both the superwash cycle and the heavy duty cycle, which are the two I use most often.

On my last VMW, the problem was that it seemed like it got hung up between modes and made a buzzing noise after drain. This time though, it's like the pump just keeps running and running, but it won't shift into spin. This is an intermittent problem, I'd say it has happened three or four times now. I am able to cancel the cycle and change the selector to drain and spin in order to get clothes dry enough to go in the dryer.

I've done some research and unfortunately what I've found indicates that this is likely the control board and that this latest batch of this model of washer tends to have issues with that component. I did not know this when I made the purchase. I know that control boards are nearly the cost of a new machine if a service tech has to put one in. However, it should be covered under the manufacturer warranty since it's not even been a year. In that case, should I go through Lowes or Whirlpool in order to get someone to come service the machine? Also, do you guys think they'll fix the control board or just give me a new washer that might have the same problem?

I'm also open to it being another issue entirely that could be fixed a lot easier. I've just heard over and over again that getting service through Lowes is a real PITA. The only reason I bought from Lowes is because we have a credit card through them.

What do you guys think I should do? What is the best path forward?

Ryne,

I agree with Glenn, go directly to Whirlpool to make an appt.for a service tech to assess the problem and make the necessary repair.  I’m sorry that you’re having this problem.  But I’ll bet that the tech will be able to make the repair without any difficulty.  Better that it showed up while still under warranty than after the warranty has expired so that’s something to be thankful for at least.

Good Luck!

possibly stiff mod shifter?

I had a VMW do that in a cold basement once-rocked the washer back and blew warm air under and problem went away.Figured grease in the shifter got too stiff from the cold for the little timer motor.

It looks like I can schedule service through Whirlpool's website. They use an appliance repair shop here in Indy that apparently only does Whirlpool-sourced appliances, and the soonest they can come is Tuesday which is fine with me. However it quoted me a $95 fee just to come out and look at the washer, but that was before the system prompted me to put my machine's information in like model and serial number. I wonder if that will bring up my warranty which would cause the service charge to go away. I really don't want to have to pay almost $100 for someone to just come look.

Ryne,

It doesn’t sound right that you should have to pay $95 just to have the tech come out  to look at a machine still under warranty.  I have a Whirlpool DW that was still under warranty when the pump went out.  I CALLED Whirlpool, spoke with an agent that made the authorization for me to call their local service  provider and make an appt.  There was no  charge and he came out, diagnosed the problem, ordered the part and scheduled an return appt. to make the repair.

I suggest that you call Whirlpool and ask them to contact the service provider to make sure that you’ll not be charged for the service appt. or the repair.  Sometimes the vagary of online scheduling is more trouble than it’s worth.  I’m “Old School” and place great stock in the human element in situations like this.  Automation isn’t always all that it’s cracked up to be.

Update

I think I may have fixed the problem myself. I did the unplug/plug back in, then recalibration mode steps discussed in the Youtube video by Ben's Appliances and Junk. He was really thorough in his explanation so I was able to follow it without issue. What I appreciated was that he explained in a non-visual way what he was doing, rather than just showing it on-screen. Anyway, I did three loads yesterday, and the washer completed the cycle properly every time.

I'll obviously keep an eye out, but I think everything is now working as it should. Yay!

Yay!

However, if there really is a problem it'll hopefully recur before the warranty period ends.  Maybe run some extra loads in the interim?

Can you check Diagnostics for any fault codes that may be related?

Great News Ryne!  Lots of times with these newer machines that have electronic control boards all you need to do is unplug and then plug the machine back in and these minor problems are solved.  Here’s hoping that you’ll have no further difficulties.
