My New Computer From Craigslist

Some of you on Facebook have already seen it but I thought I would put on here as well.

It's a Compaq Presario 6435cl. 1 GB of Memory, 1.8 GHz Processor. It didn't have a hard drive, but I had an extra 40 GB drive, and took the 120 GB out of my Dell. It has an nVidia 5900 video card, cd burner, and dvd rom. Not sure how old it is. There are 6 USB ports 2 in the front, and 4 in the back.

Not bad at all for $50.00

Last March, I got a Dell GX280 computer with a 3.2 GHZ Intel P4, 1GB RAM and a 40GB hard disk. This cost me $67.00 and the seller had free shipping. I bought this for a friend. The thing looked brand new. The seller was DEFINITELY not happy about the final price, but he had no reserve.
We added another GB or RAM and a 250GB SATA drive for under $100.00.
What a deal! They are out there, you just need to look for auctions where the seller doesn't set a reserve or even misspells the name of the item!

Yes, I agree, watch for the deals -what ever the reason. I've been blasted about taking advantage of miss placed listings and such, but I don't feel it's my responsibility to monitor and correct someone else's mistakes. On ebay it's buyer and seller beware...

The Dell Optiplex has only 512 MB of memory, and from what I read online, is the maximum for this machine. The processor is slightly faster than the Compaq at 1.10 GHz, not very noticeable to me, but the RAM was a huge improvement. I can have FirexFox, and Outlook 2009 running at the same time.

Kevin, you can never have to many computers, LOL. At one I had 3 computers. One I bought all the hardware and a friend built it for me. The same friend gave me an old computer of his that he didn't want, then when his company was raffling off old computers, he won one and gave it to me.

In a way, it's worth having at least one backup machine. I had hard drive failure develope on my primary Internet computer about a year ago. I swapped in an old--and slow!--backup for a day or so, just to keep me going, until I had the chance to actually swap disks, install the OS, etc.

Hey! It's got a floppy drive!

A funny story about floppy disks:

Several years back, I had an old Dell Dimension that took the floppy disks. Anyway, I needed some. So, I go to the local BEST BUY store. I'm looking...and looking...and all I see are CD ROMs. An associate asks me if I need help finding anything. I say: "YES! I'm looking for floppy disks!" This kid looks at me with a straight face and says: "Are you serious?" I'm thinking to myself, of COURSE! Why else would I ask for floppys if I didn't need them?! Long story short, we located some. Dusty and forgotten behind stacks of CD-R's, was ONE lonely box of floppys.

I use 3.5" diskettes to back up my bookmarks on FireFox. The Dell Optiplex even has a 5 1/4" disk drive. A company out east had about 22 5 1/4" disks that had Word Perfect documents on them that needed to have retrieved for some law firm, and couldn't find anyone with a 5 1/4" disk drive. So I got paid to copy the documents onto cd and send them back. I guess it pays to have some old technology.

I have not put a floppy in any computer I've built in years. No point when USB drives a $3.00 and hold 10000x what a floppy would.
