This is a fairly typical arrangement in some parts of the South, according to what I've been told.
In many(not all) cases the adult son(s) have a "Garconniere" (Son's house) on the property, and eventually the son and his wife (partner) outgrow it with children, and the parents' swap the "big house."
The contractor said 2 washer hookups is no problem.
Lawrence, very interesting. I know us Cajuns like to build what's called an "outdoor kitchen", an extension of the house which is an extra kitchen, or it can be a small cottage, or in my case, a full blown 2 bed, 1 bath house. I've never heard of the Garconiere but it makes sense.
A lavatory is the sink in the bathroom where you wash your hands, etc. A portable washer can be hooked to the lav or to the kitchen sink via a unicouple.
I've never heard the term lavatory applied to a sink or to a single toilet. In my American experience, it is used synonymously with "washroom" or "bathroom" and generally when one asks to visit the lavatory, it is understood that using a toilet is the main purpose.
glad to see the progress, I am so glad you made out as well as you did, with Katrina and this seemingly, FOREVER post storm time. I wish you the very best with your new home. Arthur.
The men were there early this morning with the backhoe to level the driveway and finish the concrete form. Got some close-ups and video of the Brokebackhoe Cowboy for Appnut and Toggle.
