Well I decided to upgrade my Miele W 5873 WPS to this new TOL Miele. I must say I'm very impressed with this machine. It's so quiet and the programme flexibility is fantastic. I'll post more info and videos on the programmes.

The machine is super quiet, there is no slurping pump noise as this model has a variable speed drain pump. The Miele detergent is very good and has a pleasant smell. I will still alternate and use other detergents as well. The orange button is very Miele, now you have to press the start/stop button to unlock the door. No problem, just another way to do things.

I have a MOL W1 too.  I think it's a very good and very sophisticated machine.  Both the UK and German consumer associations have tested machines from the W1 range and they both say the machines are good but rinsing can be an issue.  However, I enabled "Maximum Rinse Level" on mine the day I got it.  This doesn't add any extra time but it does fill right up high for all the rinses.

 

The German consumer association also tested Miele's Twin Dos UltraPhase detergent.  They found it didn't perform as well as the best powdered detergents while also costing twice as much.  Interestingly, my user guide says to do some hot washes with <span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">powdered detergent</span> to keep the machine clean.  So that's what Miele thinks of its UltraPhase!  At least you can use the Twin Dos for your own liquid detergents, softeners etc. if you want.  How are you finding the machine?

I have programmed the water plus function with 3 drops in the settings and the rinse level comes up to the glass door.

Interesting that the German consumer magazine tested the detergent and didn't find it that good. I'm quite happy with the performance of the UltraPhase products, but I do use other detergents as well.

They tested the Miele W1 with TwinDos and found the detergent washed stains out completely, photos attached. Here is the link

Read the same German consumer testing regarding Miele

TwinDos/Ultra Phase detergent and bleach.

It made the same error Which? and others continue; comparing liquid detergents to powdered products with bleach. The two just aren't the same when it comes to stain removal and it really isn't fair to compare.

An activated oxygen bleach containing powder such as Persil or Ariel is going to almost always beat a liquid detergent across the board for stain removal and whiteness. As for Miele's oxygen bleach, liquid hydrogen peroxide based bleaches nearly always do not perform well as percarbonate or perborate powders. Unless new formulations are different you really need hot to boiling water to get pure peroxide bleach going.

Miele says that the TwinDos / ultraPhase system works for colored and white clothes equally - so the consumer magazines were just testing that claim.

Variable speed drain pump?

For real? How is it adressed by the PCB in terms of speed? And is it just 2 speed or such or really a infinite speed selection?

Info from Miele about the pumps

This is the sales information that was given to us regarding the pump. Even the PowerWash pump is a variable speed one too.

"The appliance has a particularly effective pump system given the use of separate drain and circulation pumps. Speed-controlled pumps, when run at a higher speed, are able to transport a larger volume of water and build up higher pressure. This gives a head height of 1.80 m without the need for conversion or additional costs. The speed controlled pump system is maintenance-free. There are also improved acoustics as there are less “slurp noises” while pumping and intensive flow and no 100 Hz hum."

Launderess, I don't use Peroxide but know some people that swear by it and I know they are not using anywhere near to boiling water..also know some that use peroxide based liquid detergent. .what is a good temp for peroxide based liquid detergent? If it needs to be near to boiling seems to me than its just pretty much a poor choice for a whites detergent. Cheryl

Hair dye stains

My wife got her hair dyed and some residue dye stained her pillow slip. I washed the load of sheets on Minimum Iron at 60 degrees C with the Miele UltraPhase detergent set for Colours. The detergent split is two thirds Phase 1 and one third Phase 2, which contains the sodium hydroxide. The residual dye stains on the pillow slip were completely removed.

Oxygen Bleaches

Are all based upon hydrogen peroxide. The two powders (percarbonate and perborate) are merely hydrogen peroxide bound to washing soda and borax respectively.

That being said oxygen bleaches are sensitive to temperature, pH and time. When Consumer Reports tested the liquid versions of Snowy, Clorox II and others they judged the results less effective than the powders (Biz, Clorox II).

Because temperature does affect the aggressiveness of oxygen bleaches it can be used to work in favor of what one wants to do. That is if you are trying to bleach delicate fabrics, wool, or silk you can use hydrogen peroxide in cool water. It may take some time to get where you want to go.

OTOH professionals use oxygen bleaches with added alkaline (usually ammonia but powdered laundry detergents work as well) and or high temperatures to speed up the reaction.

Like liquid Clorox II oxygen bleach Miele's Ultra Phase 2 contains more than hydrogen peroxide including chelating agents, pH adjusters and so forth to give better stain removal and whitening.

P&G sells a commercial version of Ariel liquid oxygen bleach that supposedly works in "low" water temperatures for stain removal, whitening and sanitation. IIRC is based not on pure hydrogen peroxide but an altered form much like the activators added to powdered oxygen bleaches.

Water consumption

I did around a 5 kg load of whites in the Miele on the weekend. Cottons programmes at 60 degrees with water plus (level 3) and extra rinse.

This is my kind of water consumption.

You can add the price of the utilities in the settings menu. My machine is also is connected to hot & cold, therefore the energy consumption is around 50% less.
