Awesome machines, they are very dependable and well-built!

Those are just like the ones that we have, if you want, you can check out the kind that we have.

You'll have to check the archives, Imperial board, 2011.

the thread title is "Our 1990 Whirlpool Pair."

Interesting how WP still hadn't made the holes in the tub go to the top yet in '87.

Nice set. It is amazing how time has flown, and how now these models were brand new not such a long time ago in my mind. Now they are vintage classics. At first when the Direct Drives came out, I was disappointed as I wanted the Belt Drives to continue on. I did grow accustomed to the DDs and they have proven to be quite reliable. Good luck and congratulations on taking over your childhood washer and dryer.

As for the holes in the tub, the first models I saw with the perforations from bottom to top debuted in the Fall of 1988.

Have a good one,
James

James....Thanks so much for the nice comments...actually this set is not from my childhood...I was actually in my 20's when my mother bought this set but it was nice that I was able to keep these in the family...We had a 1968 Frigidaire Rapid Dry washer and matching dryer when I was growing up...when I have time...I will post "MY FRIGIDAIRE STORY"...

I remember seeing a lot of these as a kid

It is nice to see that a set has survived in such nice coindition. Usually when I see these models now they have had the life beat  out of them. I think what makes this extra cool is the fact that they were purchased by new by your mom so you know their history. Congrats on your acquisiton.....PAT COFFEY

LATE 80s DD WASHER ADD DRYER PAIR

These were great machines by this time and they had better relilablity than MT or GE or anyother major US brand for that matter.

WP added holes higher up the sides of the wash basket and redesigned the fill flume to spray the water at the center of the flume more toward the basket. These changes were made to help address the occasional complaints about smelly washers caused by build ups at the top of the outer tub. Just like today with all the complaints about moldy FL washers these build-ups are caused by poor washing practices. Which include using too cold a water temperatures, too little detergent, cheap weak detergents, using the same brand of detergent all the time, always cold wash & rinse, always using warm wash& rinse and of coerce never using LCB.

Tony I would bet from the looks of your moms washer if you take the cabinet off you would see almost no build-ups at the top of the outer tub.

Thanks for all the kind remarks....this set is super special to me...nothing but good memories....my grandmother also lived with my mother and loved this set too! She passed about 4 years after they were bought...but she did give them a workout on a daily basis...
