Well... I can't recall the name, but I remember those were made about December 1960. (:

Hint #2 -- It ain't no Neptune.

I remember those were made about December 1960
Its hard to read Rick, it actually says December, 1950.

The motor must have some kind of wheel or tire below the motor to drive the pump?
Yes a rubber drive wheel pressed onto the bottom of the motor shaft.

Looks like it moves on that rubber flange connecting the pump to the tub?
Sure Does

Does it run?
It does now :) Did the first couple of loads in it tonight!

Clue #3: Why is there no visible transmission?

I'm guessing it is a diaphram water level control and pump from a Norge,
Sorry, try again. :)

Whats that black box beside the water level switch
It protects electrical contacts to a component that sticks into the tub and is energized at certain times during the cycle.

Is this an early direct drive machine?
I would say that is true statement.

The gasket on that water Pump looks like a donut!
Not as tasty though.

Did you buy a 1,000 ft roll of Howard Johnson Orange wire??
That wire is original to the machine, I've never used orange wire before, except for new orange power cords. Did you put something extra in your fruit smoothie this morning dear?

I'll guess Norge.
Sorry, try again. :)

A Norge pump.
Nope

Greg do you know what this is?
