In 1979 ......

my folks bought that same fridge in the same color (without the shaded affect) for $1200 at Memco at Fairfax Circle. I hated drinking water or using ice out of that thing because the water tasted plasticy and the ice had a foul smell and taste if you used them in ice water. My Dad hated it because the ice maker broke down every couple of years and had to be either fixed or replaced. My mom hated that fridge because it was noisy and did not have the textured surface like Whirlpool. Actually my mom wanted a Whirlpool but they would have had to order it for her and my dad would not wait (it was a few days before thanksgiving) so they took the GE which was in our kitchen until the 1999 remodel and then it was out in the garage for a few years before I talked my mom into getting rid of it to save energy. The GE AMERICANA on Prime-Time Television!!!!

Yes, George & Weezy had it (it was a fairly standard Sit-Com prop; other TV shows have had that exact model, as well)...

In fact, it took a lot of re-runs for me to see that it was in THE BRADY'S kitchen, too! (And theirs was avocado green!)

Funny, though, how a lot of TV shows despite having the water tap on the freezer door, still get their water out of the faucet on the sink (or nowadays, it's a BOTTLED WATER, stored in the 'frigerator compartment)...

actually in 2 episodes of the Brady Bunch the water dispense

Both the episodes were from the first season. The first episode was the one where Mike and Carol switch jobs.....at the beginning of the episode Mike enters the kitchen after coaching the boys in baseball and Alice gets him water from the fridge dispenser. The other episode is the one where Marcia nominates Mike for father of the year. In one scene Jan and Cindy wander ionto the kitcehn after bedtime looking for a missing Marcia. When Alice and Carol inquire what they are doing in the kitchen at that late hour Jan says they wanted a drink and fills a glass with water form the fridge dispenser. I think the reason you do not see those dispensers used as a rule on TV is quite obvious. Most of the time even if the fridge is hooked up to electricity it is not hooked up to water. Also I would like to state that the reason it was so commonly seen on TV back in the day was probably because it was GE's TOL model and it was made from 1969 to 1980 before GE made any exterior changes.....PAT COFFEY

That would be a Harvest Gold paint job. Harvest would be just solid yellow.

I had a very similar GE sxs when I bought this place in '97. I checked with GE and they said it used 1700 KWh/year. I replaced it with a modern Kitchenaid Superba SXS around 2001, which uses about 650 KWh/yr. The impact on my electricity bill was immediate. I also replaced a 1500KWh/yr GE top freezer out on the enclosed patio with a 580 KWh/yr top freezer KA model. Both the KA units are humming along just fine.

The GE SXS had ice maker problems, but related to the water valve. Once I replaced that, no problems. And it gave little barrel shaped ice cubes that I miss now. Now all we get are those stupid crescent shaped things.

On the patio GE, I had to repair the defrost timer, which was located in the bottom grille area. It was kicking off the compressor completely. I opened it up and fixed a loose connection by soldering it. Worked fine after that, but I wound up replacing it anyway as described.

The GE was a decent enough unit but it just ate too much juice.

Eventually I'd like to get a french door bottom freezer for the main kitchen, and a bottom freezer single door for the patio.

FRENCH DOOR BOTTOM FREEZERS

Are convenient for some locations, but be a where of the many problems with this design before you buy.

1 much-less usable space in the freezer drawer and no freezer door storage.

2 Less refrigerator door storage space than one piece doors.

3 many more problems with the ice makers because of the sliding ice bucket.

4 Complicated drawer slides for freezer and french door refrigerator hinges center mullion and gaskets.

5  And If you dare to get one with the ice dispenser through the refrigerator door which nessatates the ice maker being located in the refrigerator section be prepared for frequent problems over the life of the refrigerator and much higher than expected power usage.

6 In most cases if you want shorter doors and ice and water dispensers the SXSs are much better overall and a top freezer is still the most reliable and energy efficient choice.

My daughter has a French Door Bottom freezer Maytag, came with the house - dumbest design ever, she hates it. The French door thing makes no sense whatever, unless you can't open a full size door due to limited space!
