Need expert advice on GE washer and dryer

[COLOR=#000080; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium]Due to space limitations in my condominium, I have to use a unitized top load washer and dryer.  I currently have a Frigidaire stacked washer and dryer which is giving me problems again.  [/COLOR]

 

[COLOR=#000080; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium]I am looking to purchase a GE unitized washer and dryer or Kenmore (which is on sale) with the stainless steel wash basket.  The Maytag/Whirlpool is too deep for the space, so I am limited to the GE/Kenmore.[/COLOR]

[COLOR=#000080; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium]1) Can the preset water levels be adjusted for more water?[/COLOR]

[COLOR=#000080; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium]2) This is a straight vane agitator, not the hydrowave.  Does anyone know anything about the straight vane.  I have been searching the internet for videos on this machine showing the agitation, spin, rinse, etc., and nothing is available.[/COLOR]

New GE-KM Full Sized Stack W-Ds

The jury is still out on these machines as far as we are concerned. GE laundry appliances have not set any reliability records since about 1995, and we continue to see problems, this week we looked at a machine like you are considering that was two weeks out of warranty that had a locked-up transmission. She is going after GE for hopefully free repairs and if not will give Home Depot a really hard time.

To bad that that you can't get the deeper WP-MT top load stack in your space, this machine is the class act for reliability in this type of machine. The other great choice is a Speed Queen Front Load stack and unless you are well under 40 years old this would be the last washer you would likely ever buy.

A used real MT stack would be another possibility, but they are harder on clothing and are also somewhat smaller in both the washer and dryer and they never made one with a 2SP motor. On the positive side they were fairly durable and most repairs are fairly easy, so if you have a good independent repair person around you can keep these going for at least 30 years.

Hi John,

Thank you for the advice. I did find a Maytag stack set that was brand new and never used. It however, only had a one speed motor. From the reviews on that particular model, it was too hard on clothing, so that one is out of the question.
It was a model LSE7806ACE. If it was a two speed motor, I would have purchased.

The GE is a perfect fit for the space I have. However, I agree, the reliability issues are a problem. I just might go for the Maytag/Whirlpool set and just let it stick out of my closet.

My question - can I adjust the factory preset water levels on these machines? I want a full tub of water for washing and rinsing.

Also, which would be the better washer - the Maytag or the Whirlpool?

The MT and WP are identical except the MT may have a light in the dryer, so either get the MT or the one with the best price. This machine still has mechanical water level switches so they should be adjustable. There are two WLSs as this machine uses a higher level for washing, and it does spin rinsing unless you select Fabric Softener Added, and then it does an agitated rinse. both WL controls could be adjusted.

Another possibility would be to get the older MT and add a 2SP motor and a switch to manually select low speed when desired.

I have remeasured my space and the whirlpool/maytag will really stick out too far. I still may have to go for the General Electric.

Is it possible to adjust the preset water levels on the ge stack?

You have been a terrific source of information and it is very much appreciated.
