Both Nellie's products arrived Friday afternoon. The tins are very cool! Both claim to be biodegradable/eco-friendly, allergy friendly, unscented. Both work well (especially the dishwasher detergent) in very soft water.
Laundry Soda: I purchased the nugget format, which doses 1 tablespoon of the highly concentrated powder per load. The first two things you'll notice: No suds in the final rinse (an issue for those of us with water softeners), and absolutely no scent on clothing at the end of a cycle---not even the slightly industrial scent of products like Fuller 86 and Amway SA8. No scent whatsoever.
It handled an 8-lb. load of heavily-stained kitchen whites washed using the 96-minute Sanitize cycle (no liquid chlorine bleach) about as well as most middle-of-the-pack detergents. Light stains remained behind on tomato + greased combo stains, as well as coffee and heavy grime (white socks). Nellie's also makes an Oxygen Brightener, which the website suggests you include in heavily-soiled loads. I'm assuming all stains would have been removed completely had I added liquid chlorine bleach.
I've also used it on loads of bed linens, bath linens, light colors, and a dark brown queen-sized comforter. All loads emerged clean. Nuggets dissolved well in warm, soft water. I use Perwoll Intensive Black on loads of black clothing, so can't comment on how it dissolves or if it leaves white residue on dark colors in cold water .
This is the only biodegradable/eco-friendly/non-toxic detergent I've used, so I can offer no comparisons to similar products on the market, or "Free" versions of Tide, All, etc. I'm assuming the product will struggle more in harder water. Haven't tried it in the Speed Queen; all loads washed in the front-loading Frigidaire.

Two tablespoons placed in the main wash compartment have cleaned everything I've thrown at it, from sauté pans to saucepans with starch rings to casserole dishes. Nellie's doesn't, however, keep the stainless steel interior sparkling as do Cascade Platinum pacs. Doesn't appear to create suds. Again, these stellar results achieved in very soft water.
The packaging: Love the tins, especially the funnies-style ads on the back. Tins can be reused by purchasing bagged products from Nellie's---or with whatever you have on the shelf at home. Products available online at Nellie's website, amazon.com, and at some Crate & Barrel stores if there's one near you.
