Today we finally had the last of our new appliances installed. It was a mess beyond compare! The only thing that went right was the actual buying of the appliances at the store. It just went downhill from there.
The appliances were delivered in two trips. The microwave was delivered first. When it was delivered, I asked the guys if they could bring it around to the back door as it is a straight shot right into the kitchen. No problem they said! They delivered it and installed it. Perfect.
When they came to deliver the range and dishwasher, that's when the problems began. I asked them to deliver the appliances through the back door since the front door is on the opposite side of the house from the kitchen, and there is a large entertainment center on the wall behind the front door that takes an entire day to unload and move. Since the guys who brought the stuff spoke only Spanish, I had to show them where to bring the appliances (around the back). They just said "No." Any attempt to get an answer out of them resulted in a rapid fire exchange of Spanish between them. I finally told them I would reschedule when I moved the entertainment center. They didn't understand this at all and kept saying "No se" over and over again. So I just closed the door and left for work.
I called HD when I returned a few days later and tried to reschedule a delivery. I had to call one department, then another and yet another before I was told I had to call the independent delivery company. When I called them, they said that the appliances were sent back to Home Depot, I called Home Depot again and they told me that the delivery company has them. We went around and around on this until a woman from HD finally told me they show the appliances as being delivered and that I can't get a second set for free.
I finally went down to the HD store and told the appliance salesperson about my dilema. They said they'd investigate and get back to me. Finally a rep from GE call me (I ordered Maytag appliances, why is GE calling?) They said that after the first delivery attempt was made, the guys who delivered then just brought the appliances back to the warehouse. They just left them on the loading dock and didn't tell anyone why there were there and left. After a few days, the warehouse supervisor figured out that they were "extra" appliances and sent them back to Maytag. So to fix this, they would have to reorder and redeliver these items.
So they came to deliver the appliances, and this time one of the guys spoke english. He said he didn't know why the other guys wouldn't deliver through the kitchen door. So once he got the range and dishwasher in the back door, he left. I asked him about the installation and he said another company would come by to install the units. So now we have a range and dishwasher in a box sitting in our kitchen's dining area.
I was worried as I hadn't heard from any installation company yet, so I called HD and they said to call the delivery company and here we go again. I finally found out that yet another company does the installation of the appliances. When I got their phone number they said no installation had been scheduled. The rep from this company said she'd investigate as to why an appointment hadn't been rescheduled and get back to me. A couple of hours later, she said she'd have someone out the next day.
Next day comes. Two guys show up. One guy said that he can't get the range past the front of the refrigerator and that I would have to call yet another company to move the refrigerator. I told him the damned thing is on wheels and its easy to move, just move it. He said he couldn't and was already packing his bags to leave. I told him I'd move the SOB for him and he said he doesn't have time for that as he has other customers to take care of. So I told him if he leaves before I move the refrigerator he'll be bringing these appliances with him. It took all of 5 minutes to move the refrigerator and he begrudgeingly installed the range. But then he left and said yet another guy wold have to come and install the dishwasher. Once again I called and was told that no appointment had been set up. They finally said they'd send a guy later that day. He arrived, looked at the dishwasher and told me a new drain hose would be needed for $45.00. I pointed out to him that the new DW comes with a new drain hose and that I wouldn't pay for a new one. Then I asked him why he tried to pull that with me. No response.
But he did do a good job instaling the dishwasher and he left.
So it only took about 2 months getting all the appliances installed and countless hours on the phone getting things straightened out.
I think the problem was that HD has everything except sales subcontracted out and that there is very little communication between each entity. If I hadn't gotten such a good price for these appliances, I would have sent them all back and told them to forget about them. But I don't think I'll be buying anything else from HD for awhile.
