Today we finally had the last of our new appliances installed. It was a mess beyond compare! The only thing that went right was the actual buying of the appliances at the store. It just went downhill from there.
The appliances were delivered in two trips. The microwave was delivered first. When it was delivered, I asked the guys if they could bring it around to the back door as it is a straight shot right into the kitchen. No problem they said! They delivered it and installed it. Perfect.
When they came to deliver the range and dishwasher, that's when the problems began. I asked them to deliver the appliances through the back door since the front door is on the opposite side of the house from the kitchen, and there is a large entertainment center on the wall behind the front door that takes an entire day to unload and move. Since the guys who brought the stuff spoke only Spanish, I had to show them where to bring the appliances (around the back). They just said "No." Any attempt to get an answer out of them resulted in a rapid fire exchange of Spanish between them. I finally told them I would reschedule when I moved the entertainment center. They didn't understand this at all and kept saying "No se" over and over again. So I just closed the door and left for work.
I called HD when I returned a few days later and tried to reschedule a delivery. I had to call one department, then another and yet another before I was told I had to call the independent delivery company. When I called them, they said that the appliances were sent back to Home Depot, I called Home Depot again and they told me that the delivery company has them. We went around and around on this until a woman from HD finally told me they show the appliances as being delivered and that I can't get a second set for free.
I finally went down to the HD store and told the appliance salesperson about my dilema. They said they'd investigate and get back to me. Finally a rep from GE call me (I ordered Maytag appliances, why is GE calling?) They said that after the first delivery attempt was made, the guys who delivered then just brought the appliances back to the warehouse. They just left them on the loading dock and didn't tell anyone why there were there and left. After a few days, the warehouse supervisor figured out that they were "extra" appliances and sent them back to Maytag. So to fix this, they would have to reorder and redeliver these items.
So they came to deliver the appliances, and this time one of the guys spoke english. He said he didn't know why the other guys wouldn't deliver through the kitchen door. So once he got the range and dishwasher in the back door, he left. I asked him about the installation and he said another company would come by to install the units. So now we have a range and dishwasher in a box sitting in our kitchen's dining area.
I was worried as I hadn't heard from any installation company yet, so I called HD and they said to call the delivery company and here we go again. I finally found out that yet another company does the installation of the appliances. When I got their phone number they said no installation had been scheduled. The rep from this company said she'd investigate as to why an appointment hadn't been rescheduled and get back to me. A couple of hours later, she said she'd have someone out the next day.
Next day comes. Two guys show up. One guy said that he can't get the range past the front of the refrigerator and that I would have to call yet another company to move the refrigerator. I told him the damned thing is on wheels and its easy to move, just move it. He said he couldn't and was already packing his bags to leave. I told him I'd move the SOB for him and he said he doesn't have time for that as he has other customers to take care of. So I told him if he leaves before I move the refrigerator he'll be bringing these appliances with him. It took all of 5 minutes to move the refrigerator and he begrudgeingly installed the range. But then he left and said yet another guy wold have to come and install the dishwasher. Once again I called and was told that no appointment had been set up. They finally said they'd send a guy later that day. He arrived, looked at the dishwasher and told me a new drain hose would be needed for $45.00. I pointed out to him that the new DW comes with a new drain hose and that I wouldn't pay for a new one. Then I asked him why he tried to pull that with me. No response.
But he did do a good job instaling the dishwasher and he left.
So it only took about 2 months getting all the appliances installed and countless hours on the phone getting things straightened out.
I think the problem was that HD has everything except sales subcontracted out and that there is very little communication between each entity. If I hadn't gotten such a good price for these appliances, I would have sent them all back and told them to forget about them. But I don't think I'll be buying anything else from HD for awhile.

It's Not Just HD

Pretty much all the large "chain" stores including IIRC Sears, contract out not only delivery but installation. No one wants to keep those departments on payroll anymore.

Also as you've noticed, workers are either fresh off the street, or just out of jail, or just across the border. Either way you get the lowest paid persons delivering your good, who have little to no incentive for getting the job done right.

Moi? If at all possible pick up and install appliances yourself. Failing that, consider having delivery, but do the installation.

Miele does pretty good work, but then again for the prices they charge, they darn well better.

Glad things finally worked out for you though! Good job keeping on top of things too, especially when that dw installer tried to pull an okey-doke and get an extra $45. Bet he has swindled many a poor unsuspecting housewife or other customers with that one.

Everything installed in our house was done by us for this very reason, with exception of the reverse rack WU204 Maytag dishwasher installed June 18 of 1990. A very competent older gentleman in his mid 60's hooked up and installed the dishwasher. Scary thought to think he's probably dead, or close to death, by now. I sure would like to pick his brain about vintage appliances today!!!

Lowes and Home Depot

Delivery people in this area are doing delivery between the visits to the parole officer. About 2 weeks ago a lady and her daughter were tied up and raped by two of HD delivery persons out of jail for only 3 days. 1 for attempt murder and the other for armed robbery. Such nice folks doing delivery now.

I wholeheartedly agree with Eugene, local is the only way to go. The local appliance store that we shop at not only delivers and installs, but they also service what they sell too. Every major appliance in our house comes from Hargrave Appliance in Merrill, WI.

"Round hole, square peg?" No problem just shove re

The only appliance I have ever had installed "professionally" was a GE DW that was defective right out of the box. It was (fianlly) a factory-authorized replacment for one that was so bad it was not field-repairable. In my case the thing would lock-up "OCCASIONALLY" and not re-start a subsequent new cycle/programme. Electronic controls, natch. Getting it repaired or replaced took MONTHS! 5 control-boards later, and it STILL misbehaved.

The units was replaced and installed upoon my absence. Needless to say, the installers made a messy bloody abortion of the whole area and job.

Since English is spoken here, perhaps including at lease ONE English-speaker per team/crew would be good policy for businesses. And I'm sure Homo-Depot could make it so upon it insistance, even with sub-contractors.

Sorry you had to endure that Allen.

What a nightmare

I don't think I will be ordering any appliance from HD. Sounds like a total nightmare. The part about the delivery men not understanding English and taking the appliances back and not telling anyone about them would really tick me off.

I remember when I got my washer and dryer from Sears in the early 90's I had no problem with the installation or the installers. The only problem was they almost didn't fit through the door of the trailer.

I got my Frigidaire set from Rentway now RAC and the delivered and installed the washer but not the dryer. They wouldn't install the dryer because it was gas. They won't install any gas appliance because the don't want to be held liable if something goes wrong.

The only reason we put up with this mess is that we got a 25% discount off of the appliances and then the store added a 15% discount on top of that. But in the end, was it worth it?
When we had our Maytag installed in the last house in 1990, we had a nice guy come to the house to deliver and install it. He was very meticulous about cleaning up the area around the DW when he was done. And he spoke perfect English too. But then again, that unit was bought from a small independent Maytag dealer too.
But we are happy everything is installed and is working right now. So we can put this mess behind us.

Appliance delivery & installation....

I have enough mechanical ability that I can do many things around the house my self, including installing major appliances. Granted if they offer FREE installation I may take them up on it, but I will watch as they go just to make sure they don't "F" something up.

But yes I do agree the delivery people could really care less! They are only there to deliver what ever it is and move on. They grumble about stairs and you are lucky if they are willing to move "it" beyond just inside the door, let alone unbox it.

It does explain the large amounts of damaged appliances, some still in boxes one sees in outlets/stores or fleaBay now a days. Or, even better all those factory reconditined units seen as well.

Considering how bad the build quality is for some major appliances, and now most everything has either a motherboard or some sort of electronics, a bad delivery or installation can cause great damage.

I've read about horror stories about HD subcontracted roofers, remodelers, flooring installers, etc...

My method is to buy the appliances/materials myself and then do my own install. Or, if I can't handle it, then go to a locally owned business to buy the stuff and have them do the installation/work.

I only use HD to buy materials.

It helps that I have a pickup truck and a van, and am pretty good with hand tools.

And of course if you buy all your appliances vintage used off Craigslist or eBay, you automatically get to be the installer ;-).

Subcontractors at Home Depot

Yes I also use Homo Depot to only buy materials. I have looked at and considered buying major appliances, carpeting, doors and windows, but ultimately go somewhere else mostly for better all around customer service.

A couple years ago I was shopping around to have central heat and A/C installed in my house. Home Depot ALWAYS has this very large Carrier home A/C unit sitting just outside the entrance with a big sign "Free Estimates" on it. so one day I thought "why not"?, I inquired in the store, got the number and called to schedule an appointment.

The set appointment time came and went, no one showed and no phone call. About 2 weeks go by, I call again and scheduled another appointment. Again, the time came and went, no show and no call. Hmm. After getting pissed off, I waited a couple months and thought I would try giving them one last chance and called to make yet another appointment, but this time vocalized (loudly) my displeasure about the 2 previous no shows.

Surprise, surprise, this time someone showed up, though an hour late due to traffic. It turns out he drove in from some heating and A/C shop FIFTY MILES away!! Come on… this is Los Angeles, I KNOW there numerous other businesses with a 5 -10 mile radius of my house!

So this guy walks in, glances around the front room he's standing in, then asks how many bedrooms and sq. feet. He then sits, opens his 3 ring binder to a chart and proceeds to tell me I need a 4 ton cooling (A/C) unit and it will be X dollars to do the installation. This "put me off" so I thanked him for his time and sent him on his way.

If you have never gotten an estimate for central A/C installation, the way it should be done and the way the 5 other estimates I got were done, INCLUDING Sears, is…. They measure each room in the house and ceiling height if not standard. They also factor in the number of windows and their size and use all this info to calculate the cooling load required. This Home Depot contractor did none of this and told me I need a 4 ton A/C unit, yet ALL the others told me I need a 5 TON unit. So this means if I went with him, my A/C would have to work harder and run longer on the hot days to keep my house cool (can you say "higher utility bills"?). His price was also $3000 higher then any other estimate I received! So needless to say, I did not go with the Homo Depot contractor.

I ended up going with a small, local independent guy who did a great job of installation, gave excellent customer service, even returning months later with a smile to make a couple small adjustments and was nearly $6000 less then that HD contractor!

Unfortunately, when Lowes arrived on the scene 5+ years ago, the last of the small dealers closed. My only options here are HD, Lowes, and Sears. IK bought my fridge and dw April & May of 2007 from Sears. Both installations were handled extremely well and very carefully.

That is why i

Never ever buy anything form "big box" stores especially appliances, my family insists on using locally owned and operated appliance stores, it saves time, headaches and in the long run money.

I don't like strangers, whom I pay, wasting my time

Too much fluffing around - you should have started billing them for your time after the second phone call. That's what I would have done. Send your complaint and an itemized invoice for your time, plus phone calls and other costs, to the HD company director via registered mail. So what if they choose to subcontract, the responsibility to fullfill their contractual obligations in a reasonable and timely manner is still theirs. Your case is very unreasonable and you should definitely write about it and not just to the company director. If push comes to shove, local tv stations and papers love this kind of stuff. Letting the HD CEO know that you are media savvy and prepared to go public always helps bring about quick resolution. You could do a quick youtube blog and put the link in your complaint letter.

Whenever I am in the 'States,

I buy, pick up and install major appliances and other such for my parents myself.
But when I am home teaching, they are dependent upon the folks who were too dumb to burn burgers at Burger King.
Case in point: Monday, last week. Annual furnace inspection (I know, I know). After the last two times the idiots hade fcuked everything up, I left a note taped across the control panel, behind the steel access door: Remember to turn the ozone plates back off after testing! Ozone cleaning is NOT used here! Please turn the humidifier back ON after cleaning, it is NOT on the system's computer (they fcuked that up too when they installed it).
So I get to the 'States a day later, take a look. Sheet of paper ripped off, humidifier turned off, ozone generator turned on and the whole area around the furnace looks like a WWII battle scene.
Call the fcuking induhviduals at the only authorized dealer for a radius of 500 miles...get a snotty: "We only follow customer's special wishes when they are in writing."

So, I asked to speak to the technician. They don't permit such discussions.
Called the manufacturer and bitched...third time in three years they fcuked the annual inspection. This time, they actually listened to me - the first two times, I got the "we are sure this was an exception, all our customers are happy bullshit." Maybe Trane will take Poudre Valley Air of their list. One can only hope.

I don't mind the folks doing menial labor who only speak Spanish - they're here because the Mexican government sucks and this is their safety-valve. Until the Mexicans clean up their acts and the US starts paying American workers decent, living wages, that problem is incapable of resolution.
I do mind very much the gen-u-ine American born and bred in-duh-vi-duals who work on stuff which goes Boom! and are both clueless and disinterested.
