new arrival in my kitchen

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Tragedy struck last week, my 6 year old Maytag Performa Fridge expried, complete with smoke and burning wire smells... I didn't immediately realize it was the fridge causing the smell, but after the fire department was here and checked everything, I went away for a couple of days, only to return on Saturday to a freezer full of thawed food.
I can't believe a fridge could die in just 6 years...
So here is the new one, a Kenmore this time, and in black. Its larger than the Maytag I had, and I am hoping the quality is better.
Here it waits to be brought in the house

and the long shot...

I got black to go with the black pulls on the cabinets, and the fronts of the DW, stove, and microwave.

yes I love fridge magnets too!

Congrats!

Mother Toggle's Amana (isn't that Maytag's refrigeration platform?) had issues with a condenser fan that preferred not to work most of the time. She was out of the country when the damn thing metled down than ran continuously, without cooling.

I installed a new condenser fan and it was salvaged.

Much luck with your new purchase. Is this a GE, a Frigidaire or a Whirlpool under the badge?

Hi Jeff~

I think you will be very happy with that Fridge. It appears to be the same one my friend Joe has and his is about 10 years old. He has never has any issues with it so far.

What model Maytag Performa do you have? My Fridge in the garage is a Maytag Performa. I am wondering if it is the same model.

Glad you are O.K.

Shane

when

was black introduced as a color for kitchen appliances? I know many colors came into the kitchen mid 20th century, but when did black become a common color in the kitchen?

What might have died...

That Performa was more than likely based on the Magic Chef/Admiral platform that Maytag used forever. The one weakness I've seen with those is the little PTC start package on the side of the compressor. There is a little ceramic disc inside it which overheats and breaks causing a no start condition and sometimes a smoked start relay. There is a kit out to replace that.

Anyway, that new refrigerator looks to be a Whirlpool based unit. It'll do you well. Congrats!

Old and new

Shane, the Maytag performa was from 2002, I bought it new when I moved in here, an 18 cubic foot top freezer thing with slide-out shelves.
It never did work right, as it usually froze whatever was on the top shelf, no matter what the setting.
I believe this Kenmore to be a Whirlpool, I hope so anyway. Would a picture of the inside help?
I wanted black back in 2002, but back then it was only available on the higher end models.
Thanks for all the nice words!

Beautiful refrig Jeff, sorry you had to go through the loss of all the food in your old one. One doesn't realize what it cost to restock all those seldom used items until it happens.

Hi Jeff~

I think I have the same model from the same year. My Freezer has been acting up as of late. It is supposed to be frost- free, but it looks like a blizzard inside. Frost everywhere!

inside...

I really like the adjustable door shelves...
Now to get to the store and fill this baby up!

RPM, the Kitchenaid mixer is an Ultra Power, black, from 2001

Assuming it goes into a defrost cycle and the defrost heaters work....

Check the drain tube that probably flows throught the refrigerator compartment(if yours is a top-mount freezer) for blockage. This usually transtions to the rear outside of the unit to apiece of tubing.

Oftentimes the rubber transition piece that leads to the tube will clog with some bit of food, mould or muck.

Technically black is not a color.

I believe it came around in the 90's, then came stainless steel. I, however, still like it!

Kenmore=Whirlpool

Looking at the exterior and interior shots, I'm convinced the Kenmore Hoover 1060 purchased is Whirlpool-sourced. I have a similar Whirlpool 21 cube model that I bought in 2006; it has been working well with few problems.
Love the glass half-shelves and crispers. A nice top-freezer model at a great price (I bought mine for about $525 at Lowes).
Here's wishing you years and years of cooling and freezing!
