We've had icemakers in various friges for 30+ years and never had a problem. Can say I've ever heard of any of the people I know having a problem either. Live dangerously, buy an icemaker kit and pop it in! You'll love it.
The Whirly icemaker design is pretty much the best there is- if you want an icemaker, just go get the kit and pop it in. Your life will be much easier! That design is so reliable compared to others, Whirlpool bought Servel back in about '57 or '58 to get it- Servel invented it.
You will not regret getting an icemaker. At least, not if it's that icemaker.
1) A water valve that self-pierces the water-feed line.
2) Plastic flexible tubing(think of air tubing in an aquarium).
3) An in-line water filter that pops or leaks.
There are better ways to connect an icemaker!
Personally I kidna like those new table-top icemakers. At least that ice-maker produces product that won't/can't take on the smell of foods.

I've learned more about those things than I really cared to know. I just recently had to replace the water valve in mine (it's on its third valve now, in 12 years). I've got two timer wheels that I modified for higher water pressures, a spare mold, a spare motor, etc. I can now probably diagnose just about anything that can go wrong with one. The good thing is, there are so many in use that parts will probably be available for as long as I live.
BTW, I did not realize that Servel invented it. My grandmother had a Server gas fridge -- not one with an ice maker, unfortunately.
My guess would be that's a Frigidaire built fridge. The single dail control in the fresh food section gives it away. Is the other dail on the back wall of the freezer ?
I'll push it back a few more years and say black in the kitchen started more in the late 80's. I remember mom and dad replacing our built in oven and dishwasher with black ones in 87' or so. Magic Chef gas built in oven and a a TOL Kenmore dishwasher with a touchpad cycle selection and digital display. That was so cool for the 80's!!! The racks rusted in no time...
