1998 Kirby G5--cleaned it up and works like new!! Having never used a new-generation Kirby before, the "TechDrive experience" was amazing! Like driving a car on your rug!

Thanks Steve (SactoTeddyBear) for a great vacuum!

YAY!! It's a 1956 Electrolux Model S, courtesy of Scott Onasch (Scott55405)!! I'm still on the hunt for the elusive rug/floor nozzle, but have found all of the other accessories, including the blue woven hose!

Yikes, check out the date on the "Mystery Box" picture...I think I'm in trouble now!! ;-)

Re: Kirby G-5:

Hi! Austin, the Kirby looks like it just came out of the Box new...What did you do to get it so great looking?

"BTW" I had forgotten to mention and also to check before Shipping, was there still a Disposable Bag in the Cloth Bag? Sorry about that, if there was, but I'm sure that it didn't really have too much Dirt in it, since as I had mentioned to you, it didn't really get too much heavy-duty use ever...

Next thing, you'll be telling us that you've installed a "Cruise-Control" on it and possibly even a "Remote-Control" on it as well. I certainly feel sorry for your Mother, she'll probably be chased all over the house with a "Run-Away" Kirby G-5, because the Remote Control is Jammed...{LOL}...

Peace and Happy Kirby Vacuuming, Steve
SactoTeddyBear...

P.S. Sorry Venus, for possibly giving Austin ideas about the Cruise-Control and Remote-Control on the Kirby...

Love those vacs, a G5 is on my list as well, I haven't tried one out but if it's as quiet and smooth as the Legend plus the self propel feature that's it for me. Hopefully ones going to show up a VV soon with my name on it

Very nice Kirby, Aus, and I'm glad you got the Lux picture up too. Good luck finding that nozzle, and look forward to meeting you soon!

Re: Rug/Floor Nozzle:

Hey! Austin, are you talking about the Rug/Floor Nozzle, that has a funny Attachment Head, that has clips on either side, to turn the Nozzle around, from the Rug to the Floor Brush side, for the respective Cleaning?

If that is what your looking for, let me know I might have an extra that I can send to you, or I will see if I can locate one at a Vac Shop.

Peace and Happy Kirby and Electrolux Cleaning, Steve
SactoTeddyBear...

COOL vacs-Have a G5 that I bought from a Kirby dealer out here who was going out of business. She sent it into Kirby for rebuild-also got a G3 and a G4 from her that were factory rebuilt too.Kirby sure does a beautiful polishing job on those rebuilt machines.I got an electrolux "S" as well-rescued it from the "krusher" at the dump I go to-the dump operator let me fish it out of the compactor.Tried it out right there-the dump operators building suddenly got vacuumed-and someone mindlessly thru it out!!The front wheel on it is bent-but otherwise OK.I was figuring the "Lux "S" was a basic low cost machine.Very simple but works.I love the beautiful Burgundy color of the G5.

G4 vs G5

I see Kirby re-designed the shape of the tube that connects the vac to the bag so it comes straight out and up, whereas my G4 goes to the right and swivels, and tends to get in the way. Also makes the vac "right heavy" as the bag fills up.

Kirby G bag design

After the G5 Kirby redesigned the "bag boots" again.they put a domed top on the bag mini emptor as it comes off the fan discharge-as per a NASA engineers design for even greater airflow in the G6,Ulltimate G and Diamond G models. In one G6 model that someone took into a vac shop for complant "its too heavy"The vac shop operator let me try it when I came to visit. The machine was STILL picking up--then I opened the zipper on the cloth bag to see the paper one-the machine was so stuffed the paper bag had long burst and the cloth one was PACKED with debris.the story was is the owner was ill and she then entrusted the housecleaning to her kids. They neglected to change the Kirby bag-was like that for over 6 months.it showed that the Kirby was still packing stuff into its stuffed bag.Pretty impressive. The vac shop should have weighed the debris that was in the paper bag and cloth bag.You could barely lift the machine.Must of at least picked up its own weight in dirt!!

I wondered what was behind that domed top on the Gsix and later models. Now I know--very interesting!!

The G5 has very strong suction from the hose--as strong as my Dial-A-Matic, which is clean-air!! You wouldn't expect this because IMHO you lose more airflow with the fan-first design. But, on the 1980 Tradition I had before (one of the "large" Kirbys that carried the "Jaws" stereotype...LOL), while still stronger than other fan-first uprights, the hose suction wasn't nearly as strong as the G5. Not to mention it was a b*tch to push when the nozzle "sealed" to the carpet...felt like you were pushing a lawnmower on your rug!

I will definitely buy my next Kirby new (it may take a bit of saving if I plan to do it soon, but after this I can justify paying $1700+ for one)...I wonder what they will come up with by then??

Actually quite the opposite-the fan first designs have HIGHER airflow in CFM than the clean air designs. The clean air machines have higher suction pressure because they have two fan motors(suction fans in series with each other-otherwards one fans discharge blows into the others intake) its much like a miniature pipe organ blower. The fan first designs have lower air pressure thogh. The current Kirby is the "Diamond G" model-has a diamond pattern on the outer cloth bag and front handle panel. It has a two speed selector switch on the top of the motor housing. The switch lites green when you put it on low speed. Effective in either upringt or canister modes. Its an excellent machine-have one.
