Since I've moved into my current home in 2001, my family has owned a Kenmore dishwasher. The model number is 363.14382000. It washed dishes really well; however, it has had to be repaired by my dad several years into its lifespan. There were several leaking issues. The last straw was in late 2011, when the machine leaked water mid-wash. We subsequently switched to hand washing dishes and stopped using that dishwasher entirely, which no longer sprays water.

Since that time, my parents divorced a couple years ago and my dad started dating a new girlfriend, who recently moved in with us.

Well, just yesterday, my dad and his girlfriend went to Lowe's and FINALLY purchased a new dishwasher! It is a Samsung stainless steel dishwasher with a built-in hard food disposer, model # DW80J3020US. It costs $449.

What do you guys think?

Consumer Reports says the DW80J3020US is excellent at cleaning; fair at drying (plastic items will probably require towel drying); very good for energy use and noise. Samsung dishwashers are not known for their reliability, but other than that it looks like a fine machine. Pop the door open a few inches at the end of the cycle to let the dishes flash-dry. That should help with the drying issue.

The cycles on new dishwashers are designed to be used with pod/pac or tablet detergents. Cascade Complete ActionPacs, Members Mark Ultimate Clean Pacs (from Sam's Club), and Finish Quantum Max Powerballs take the top three spots in CR's tests. I use the Cascade Complete and Sam's Club pacs.

Let us know how it performs in your kitchen.[this post was last edited: 9/4/2016-00:31]

Celebration!

The new dishwasher has finally arrived, exactly 1 month later! It looks very fancy in my kitchen.

I've already loaded it up with dirty dishes. However, the big problem is that we don't have any dishwasher detergent.

Here are a few pics. The dishwasher was run after installation, so there are water droplets all over the interior.

GRW,
Many many American dishwashers throughout the decades had soft or hard food choppers in them. They would grind up food particles for the pump and filter system to better handle and flush away.

Many Samsung and LG dishwashers have incorporated these in their designs when coming over to the US.

They can handle regular table scraps, but will struggle with seeds and stems.
They are NOT like the powerful disposers in your kitchen sink.

They usually look like this:

My dishwasher

has one. It drains into the kitchen sinks garbage disposal. I rinse my dishes into the sink and run the dipsoser before the dishwasher though.
Some say they make a dishwasher noisier. I don't notice. All I hear is water draining into the sink disposer.

Early impressions

I ran this dishwasher for the first time last night. Using Finish Powerball detergent tabs, it excels at cleaning dishes, but struggles with drying. As a result, I had to dry a lot of dishes using a towel.

The machine is very quiet during operation. We can barely hear it going!

Drying is

a complaint of several newer models. Mine dries well except the deep bottoms of mugs which hold water. If I let them sit overnight, they are dry by morning.
I suppose adding a small blower to aid drying would bump up the cost too much, but Maytag used to have them.

I have been using the energy saver dry (no heat) for about 30 years now. Though I do use the sani-rinse option, and   I always use Finish Rinse Aid. When the machine beeps at the end of the cycle I just pop the door open and let the dishes flash dry.

If I do an overnight, which is usually; the dishes are dry by morning just leaving them sit. Occasionally plastic will still be wet, and cup bottoms will hold water, that doesn't bother me too much.  At 5:30 I am just looking for the coffee pot anyway.  Most of the time the dishes don't get unloaded until I get home that night.

Same here: once the drying cycle is over (11 minutes), I open the door a bit and ten minutes later, dishes are cool and plastics dry.

A lot of dishwashers here are opening the door automatically now.
