New Dishwasher: GE GPT225SGLWW Portable

Dropped by the appliance store to get washing machine cleaner and look what followed me home: GE’s full-size (24”) portable dishwasher. It replaces a 2017 Whirlpool portable purchased when I moved to the apartment. It’s still in perfect working condition, so gave it to another tenant. For the first time I have an all GE kitchen: Double oven range, exhaust hood, refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave.

Five hours later—I love locally owned mom ‘n’ pop businesses—the GE arrived at its new home.

First Impressions:

- Impressive cleaning, even on 65-minute Light cycle.
- The stainless steel interior is a nice upgrade from the Whirlpool.
- Capacity is a little less than the Whirlpool. I had a 2014 GE built-in back at the house, so already knew racking would be tight.
- Noticeably quieter than the Whirlpool, but well short of today’s hushed standards.
- No drying options. Only a 3-4 minute dry period at the end of the cycles I’ve used so far (Light; Heavy w/ Boost option)
- Cascade Platinum with Dawn pacs have not caused pump-choking suds.
- Light Cycle (no options available) times in at 65 minutes, which includes the odd little 3-minute drying time.
- Heavy Cycle (with added wash temp Boost option) clocked in at 3 hours.
- Sanitize option. Sanitize and wash temp Boost can’t both be selected. Pick one.

I think the logic is with Sanitize option, that also boosts the main wash temp. Congratulaitons on the new dishwasher.

Eugene, I believe you and I have very similar machines, mine's just the built-in version and not white. I agree with your observations except I haven't tried the light cycle yet. Do you find the rack configuration awkward for the placement of items such as cereal bowls? That's been my biggest gripe with this machine so far. At any rate, hope you enjoy yours!

From the GE parts diagram, this appears to have a Nidec single speed pump with flow through heater and and Askol drain pump.
That would explain the dry period - can't do a heated dry, and condensation drying doesn't require machine action.
Wouldn't be surprised normal has a longer dry period for testing environments.
This machine would probably be a great candidate for an AutoOpen style door.

Not much to go wrong besides the control board - surprised GE uses such name brand components.

I don't think that this dishwasher was even remotely built by GE..It smells of Haier and made in China. The back part of the tank reminds me of the Danby machine a friend of mine had and the filtration system is not GE based. I could be wrong but it looks awfully similar. The upper rack is also a giveaway sign as well. nice machine other than that. Too bad that LG doesn't make a Portable. I know I love my LG dishwasher.

I mean, Haier owns GE - so yes, of course it is made by Haier.
A Maytag today isn't made by Maytag either and shares a lot of similarities with the Whirlpool "parent design" - so this is still a GE with GE originalities, like how the controls are layed out, the Hot Start feature etc.

Bob- It may very well be the Sanitize option heats both the wash and final rinse. Will select Sanitize at some point and see if it lingers during the main wash, indicating a temp boost during that portion of the cycle.
Unfortunately, the owner’s manual is bereft of information we in the AW family enjoy knowing: cycle sequence, timing of the sequences, things like that.

Ryne- Funny you should mention cereal bowls. Mine are deeper than the ones shown in the manual’s racking suggestions, so I’m still searching for the best place for them. Having said that, the GE’s upper rack has eliminated problems I had placing glassware, coffee mugs and small plates in the Whirlpool.

Henrik- Since grungy cookware emerges clean using Cascade Platinum + Dawn and the Light cycle, that, as was the case with the Whirlpool, will likely become the daily driver. I do want to try the AutoSense (Normal) cycle to learn its sequence. Naturally, a portable dishwasher blocks the kitchen sink and some cabinets/drawers, so I like to get the machine out of the way as quickly as possible. Waiting three hours for it to complete the Heavy Cycle + Wash Boost seemed interminable.

Mike- The interior and racking is reminiscent of the 2014 GE I had, as well as features like Hot Start and the protocol for each drain, which begins with three or four pulse drains, followed by a standard drain with the pump running continuously. Too bad there isn’t an Ancestry.com for appliances that could reveal their exact origins.

For the past decade or so, traditional brands have farmed out their portable dishwashers and ADA compliant units, to China sourced models. The dead giveaway is the rear bump out with the external upper water feed.
I don’t know who makes all these. Midea? Candy? Haier?
Nevertheless they’ve gotten better over the years, is my understanding.

Individual parts and raw materials are also subject to import tariffs. I’ve had to fill out forms for them before. But the rates are likely different.

The tarifs (usually) follow the idea that the more of the production and assembly is done by value, the lower the tarif.

So, importing raw SS-plate and stamping/forming them in country probably means lower rates than importing the finished part.

Further considerations are how much you could actually do yourself - like if you don't have any oil/gas in you country, you HAVE to import, thus, lower tarifs.

At least that's the scientific idea behind that.

Given these use Askoll and Nidec pumps, the machine certainly is international and well travelled.

Jerome- The AutoSense (Normal) Cycle had been running about ten minutes when company stopped over. I was unable to track the cycle’s sequence. I’d guess the cycle lasted about 90 minutes. AutoSense also has a very short dry period—only 3 or 4 minutes. I didn’t choose the BOOST or SANITIZE options. I’ll track the AutoSense Cycle again sometime.

John- The brands you listed don’t inspire a lot of confidence, but it cleans very well, so I hope I can get a few trouble-free years from it.

Paul, Glenn, John, Henrik: I’m also concerned about the effects of tariffs. We’re about to find out!

Auto sense cycle, from what I've observed during the two or three times I've used it this far, has one prewash that lasts about 25 minutes, the main wash which is around 45 minutes, and then the rinse which lasts approx. 20 minutes. As Eugene says, the cycle clocks in right around 90 minutes with no options selected. However, a few days ago I accidentally selected the sanitize option and didn't realize this until the cycle was running. This majorly extends the final rinse as the machine needs to heat the water to a high level. This pushed the overall cycle time well toward three hours even on autosense.

Sanitize

Sanitize should boost main wash temp and final rinse as stated. Based off the older machines, AutoSense should be very flexible, and I would not be surprised if main wash temp is based off of soil level now that Normal has merged with AutoSense. Boost formerly just added 5°F to main wash temp. Glad to see light still giving good results though. That is impressive.
Though, the 3 minute dry will end up doing more than you think. I have been very impressed with the 8 minute heated dry on the KA.

Yes this is a Haier built machine. The arms always reminded me of Bosch machines. I had the first generation of this machine, it was a 2019 with the flip up detergent dispenser and it would always get flooded by the pre rinse leaving no detergent or very little left for the main wash when it opens. You have the slightly updated version that has a sliding dispenser which I hope has been improved as far as flooding goes. I really liked it though, it used plenty of water per fill to be able to run all the arms simultaneously as I prefer. Cleaned very very well.

This dishwasher takes forever when Sani is selected, at least four hours. It’s ridiculous. I discussed on here when I owned mine that the cycles are overprogrammed, cycle times are ridiculously long with temp boost or sani selected. It would do four pre rinses on auto, when my dishes were very lightly soiled and one would of been sufficient. It wasn’t my favorite machine. I ended up selling it over the summer cause I already have a older whirlpool portable and I was moving to a home that had a built in machine. This is the quietest full size portable dishwasher we have in the US, and the only full size portable with a stainless interior. Overall it’s a very good machine, but could be better on the programming and lower rack layout.

I used to use Cascade Platinum plus in this machine and I didn’t have the oversudsing issue but that’s only because I had extremely hard water. The regular platinum did make it oversuds which is why I switched to the Plus. It’ll be a great machine for you!!
