New dishwasher

Hi guys! I just wanted to share this with you all. We just got the new dishwasher for my parents, I came home to check it out as they never had one before. At the moment it sits on the (covered) kitchen balcony and dumps the water in a trash bucket as the carpenter has yet to come and take the measures for the new furniture. It is a free standing model expecially made to be slid under a countertop and between cabinets so the sides aren't trimmed as the front, just plain insulating plastic on the top and back and gray painted steel on the sides, plus it has a higher kick plate that can hold the same one as the cabinets to make it look integrated.
I know that many of you think that SMEG appliances are of absymal quality but in 30 years we only had this brand at home and the new oven and hobs are nothing short of wonderful and so is this dishwasher. It's so silent that me peeing is more noisy and the cycle times aren't that long. And it does get burned on and crusted residues clean! And the baskets are HUGE! I could compare to mine and my uncles dishwashers and this one could fit the others' baskets inside!

Congratulations Gabriele! I have seen Smeg dishwashers overhere, probably the same model as you have. IIRC these machines are sold overhere for around 300 Euros. Not a bad price, especially not for a machine that is rated 47dB! I might consider a Smeg when my good old AEG stops working although I am growing more and more attached to it.

Three Dishwashers!!!!!!!!

When I clicked your link I found three "models" who are welcome to come and do my dishes any time they like. I may even discard my German hunk in favour of them (Ok Ok its actually a Miele G646)

I have ahd a Smeg dishwasher before but I did not like it so much but then it was 45cm and I discovered I preferred 60cm although as I recall it washed fine - I was always intrigued by the small spray arm at the end of the main spray.

I like the Smeg retro appliances too, especially the dishwasher & washing machine.

What models? I only got videogames and poker ads on megaupload! Anyway, if you can get three, send over a spare to me, who knows if he might be useful for some other tasks than washing dishes!
Oh, I like the "orbital" wash arm, you can hear it turning when the machine is on and it reaches even the corners, I don't know how a machine with a 100w pump can get a load clean that well, but indeed it does better than my own machine that has a 250w pump (and does so in the same time!)
Oh, I forgot to show the third wash arm on the celing, it's more like a spayer with only two holes but I guess it's better than 2 standard wash arms only.

But anyway, here are some photos:

Here you can (barely) see the celing wash arm and two of the 4 forced air vents for condensation drying: the air is circulated between the inner and outer chamber to condensate the moisture without putting out any steam in the kitchen.

I would say 300 Euros is a VERY good proce for a Smeg

On this last photo there is an ensemble of another air vent and the wash arm. the other vent is on the other side and the heater is hidden, you can't see it even if disassembling the filter (that is really self cleaning!!! I couldn't believe it at first but even big debris get flushed away easly!)
The inside is all stainless steel except the middle wash arm, what a pity!

My Smeg

I am sure the one that I had (bought in 2000 - stainless steel model with push in control knob and three push buttons) had a centre spray as well as the orbital type at the bottom. It may also have had the top spray as well, but I dont remember if it has or not

Smeg ovens, hobs and sinks have always been high end quality. Only ALPES INOX uses abetter quality SS than Smeg.
Dishwahers has ever been good, just some problems with PC board when they discontinued timers [touch wood/iron/b@lls]

The orbital spray arm is a unique feature. No other dishwasher on earth can wash a tight pot/vase/glass set in the very centre of the lower rack. Maybe only older DW who had a nozzle even close to rotation centre of the arm

I also like you can choose with/without prewash for every cycle, simply pushing or not the rinse&hold button with the wash cycle one. Cycles without prewash are helpful when using liquid/gel detergents

The only downside i see is the 55°C bio/eco cycle with prewash. Whithout prewash it has 2 rinses . whit prewash it just makes one rinse.

I hate this one-rinse fashion. Latest Candy, E'luX, Mieles and Bosch/Siemens using 7 or 8 litres for a full cycle (auto) really do 1 wash + 1 rinse when they sense low soil.
Ok, the rinse aid is citric acid so it neutralizes alcalin residues but ......... IMHO is not enough

Favorit: you're right about the one rinse thing! But they do so to get the AAA classification otherwise the machine would use more energy to re-heat the dishes and not only the fresh water coming in. I personally usually use the "quotidiano" (daily) or "veloce" (quick) cycles that are 65°C plus two rinses or 38°C plus two rinses if the dishes aren't that dirty.

Gabriele, what about the lower rack ? is the normal one or the new "open space" one ?

BTW: asko, smeg and miele are the "last of the mohicans" that still make stainless steel (lower) sprayarms

@ Louis : your OekoFavorit is the last serie with SS lower arm ... keep her in shape
mine has the plastic boomerang shaped arm, copied from BSH' one and hasn't the central nozzle

It's open space, there aren't any tines just little bumps that hold the dishes and the cutlery basket is splittable in half and can be put anywhere in the machine, upper rack too or removed altogether because there is a cutlery holder on the top rack right side. Loading pans and bowls is the easiest thing ever and holds so much that it left me speechless. Even oversize pizza dishes can be put in easily as there is a lot of height. I came back home and comparing to my Indesit left me completely disappointed, not only it's hard to load anything that isn't a dish, because it bends the tines but also it holds way less because of that oversize cutlery basket that can't be moved anywhere else.

I just checked the online manual for one of these 7 liters Bosch dishwashers. The ECO cycle, which uses 7 liters, still does a pre-wash, 50°C main wash, rinse, 65°C rinse and dry. Same is true for all the other cycles except Quick Wash, which doesn't do the pre-wash. However, the also say these new dishwasher have some sort of "intelligent water management". So I assume there might only be partial water changes during, say, the pre- and main wash. Otherwise, the dishwasher would only use 1.4 liter pre fill. I also saw that on models with cutlery tray the cycle taking 15 minutes longer (155 vs. 140 minutes).

@Gabriele - IMHO your new S.M.E.G. has the best lower rack ever done. After a party you can run both racks loaded with glasses and espresso cups. 15 years ago E'lux used a similar lower rack in AEG-made DW badged as Electrolux or Arthur Martin (even some TOL, Aeg-made Zoppas). Pity, it was better than the old original zanussi one still in use

@alex - next step will be dish-wetcleaning ;-)

IMHO euro DW reached their TOP in late 80 when they needed 16-22 litres
