Ross, I have a Kenmore Elite bottom mount freezer, but no french door design on top, just one big door. I personally think the French door design is sill, most styles require you tro open both doors regardless. I like mine a lot. It replaced a 27 year old top freezer Whirlpool made Kenmore that died. I wanted something different, couldn't have a SxS due to kitchen wall butting right up against the fridge, and this was my only option that was different. I actually prefer the fridge stuff higher up since I use that a lot more.

I've always liked bottom freezer models. I think the freezer access is better via drawer than door. If I had the space, I'd prefer a single door fridge section. In my current and previous kitchens the layout and floor space makes side by sides the only option. French door models are too expensive and problem prone to be considered.

originality

Here we go again!Originaly, botom freezer refrigerators were introduced in the 40's.The french door design was one of its features available.Just like in the early 50's with the introduction of the Duomatics,Other manufacturers jumped on the "band wagon"and introduced their own versions of them.Of all the brands,Amana,Coldspot,Frigidaire,GE,Gibson,Hotpoint,Kelvinator,Norge,Philco,Rene',Signature,Victor,Westinghouse,Whirlpool and Woods,Amana was he only brand that never quit making them.whirlpool and KitchenAid had the French door design made by Whirlpool back in the early to late 70's.he originals had the porcelain on steel interiors! Why the Hell they stopped making all their B/M friges is beyond me.My Dad(God rest his soul) replaced a 1967 Westinhouse 18 cu f sxs in avacado green with a KitchenAid bottom mount model,French door refrigeraor in 1978 and it has the porcelain interior and is still in that house. My nephew bought the house before my Dad's death. The only issue Dad had was"That G'damn door seal on those doors"It seamed to need replacement every few years from friction when opening the doors. He said to my stepmother whom I originaly recomended that particular model to that he would never have taken my advice on any appliance and that they were just a fettish I had and I needed to stop being a faggot.exactly 30 years old now and I am sure that refrigerator has paid for itself. My nephew,Richard, emailed me asking if I recomended replacing i with another and I told him he could but to keep that one for backup. He bought the Amana 22 with the ice maker and the inside water dispenser. He said that he realy likes it and one of his neighbors went and bought the same one.His is now 6 years old and no problems at all.

Friends of mine recently bought appliances for their new home, all LG, from the local dealer. They went with the TOL refrigerator with French doors. It's absolutely stunning, inside and out. They like the 2-drawer freezer a lot. Of course, it also cost $3,000. Yikes!

I got the Kenmore (LG made) french door frige 2 yrs ago and I love it!!!!. Have not had one single problem with it. I have the ice and water through the door, but it's not the new taller design. I have always like bottom mount freezers. My grandmother had a whirlpool one when I was growing up and was always intranced by it. Anyway, No complaints here with mine. The freezer is deep and pulls out, has lots of space. The amount of food I can get into the frige is unbelieveable.

My sister always preferred bottom mount freezers too. She had a late 90's Amana that died on her after about 6 years because she never vacuumed the coils and she had three cats. Her kitchen is better suited for the narrower doors of a side by side and she ended up buying a Maytag wide-by-side that was on clearance. She liked the way it appeared to have only a single handle even though it had two doors. No problems with it after a couple of years, it supposedly doesn't need vacuuming, and she still gets width in the freezer that a regular side by side can't offer.

I have a friend with a very small galley kitchen with fridge located in a tight spot where you pass by the end of the counter on the way to the dining area. He really wants a french door model. One of those or a side by side is the best solution for him.

I loved my sister's first bottom freezer model. It was a used 1961 Coldspot "spacemaster" with nuclear looking SR logo on the front. It had flourescent lighting in the fridge section and it was so huge it could double as a bomb shelter. And it was a beautiful shade of band-aid pink. She chose to leave it behind rather than try to get it up two flights of stairs to remove it.
