New dryer needed ASAP

I wanted a TL because I have a family. I need to be able to stop the cycle in the middle to add something in, and to allow overnight soaking etc., even though the machine is smaller than a typical FL.The SQ washing machine was cheaper than the dryer price I wrote above.

I was also looking for a machine that would last many years of heavy duty use.
There are only 2 store chains that carry Speed Queen, and it's quite expensive here. There are sales to be had in other brands.

I also cloth diaper, so it's easier in that sense as well.

I was actually avoiding the lint trap on top, and I didn't think those were better machines, as only the cheapest ones have them.

Why then, don't the high end ones have it on top as well?
I don't need the machines to match, even though it's nicer when it does. But the difference in price is quite dramatic.

I'll get the top lint trap, as that is the general consensus here, and it narrows down the list a lot, so makes it easier to choose one.

Henene4- which machine did you have in mind?

The cheap Amana/ Whirlpool listed above only rated better than 6% of dryers. I'm not looking to ruin clothing, due to the high heat, as I dry plenty of clothing, and not only towels.

The lint screen on top/ digital version seems to be the Cabrio, and based on an above comment and some online reviews, they are not the greatest either.

I'm reading reviews on all the machines mentioned plus.

It's a shame when professional reviewers use wrong terminology and/or don't understand machine components.  The sensors at back of the drum to which they refer as temperature sensors are, of course, moisture sensors, not temperature sensors.

The reason I supposed that model was the lower reached temperature while still having the top-mounted lint filter design. The same drying engine with better control.
There's a simmilar model without steam, but can't find it for Canada. I don't think your usage situation requires steam.

I would suggest weighing the on-line reviews carefully if they're being provided predominantly by non-professionals and/or owners of the subject dryers who never bothered to read the instructions.  It is those types who skew the numbers toward predominantly negative reviews.

 

Many of us here have read a fair number of negative reviews on front-load washers made by people who don't have the slightest concept of proper use and care and complain about things like mildew and musty smells, clothes not getting clean and socks getting sucked into the pump, yet virtually none of us have those same complaints and are happy with our machines because we know how to use them.

 

I am confident the same is true for reviews on misused dryers, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners or any other household item that requires a certain amount of maintenance for proper performance, and common sense with regard to expectations of their capabilities.

 

As for so-called professional reviews, such as Consumer Reports, they are worth about as much as the paper they're printed on.

Reviews

The reviews text is indeed mostly useless. However, for example a reason why I like reviewed.com, if you just take the real and not somehow factored numbers out of the tests, you can pretty well compare them. I mean, at least they are all mostly consitent on their testing procedures.

We bought the 8.8 cf Kenmore/Whirlpool to go with the earlier 28102 washer we got a year earlier after I got my first decent tax refund a year after buying this house. It has the inside filter but works great, auto dry works nice and it's huge and quiet. It also has saved us a bit on the electric bill as it drys way more at once and only runs till it hits the set dry level if you set it properly.
Can't say how long it will live but got a great deal at the Sears outlet store just like we did with the washer before it.
Highly recommend it, no problems yet, just works well and seems well built.
They have versions with steam dry and everything else if you need it, we don't so saved a bit more.

I've never had any major issues with my GE gas dryer with the lint filter in the door opening.  18 years old now.

Then you have been very very lucky because they are trouble prone from the "premier" gas dryers they used to make back in the '60's down to the new ones they make now.

Maybe so, I've only had to replace the plastic front bearing (plastic) twice in all these years and the rear once.  Still does an excellent job, especially after the clothes come out of the Asko's high speed spin.  Knock wood, Mother's Maytag has only needed the blower fan replaced once in 22 years.
