On a tip from Ben (washman) in another thread, I sent for a free sample of Finish's new "Power & Free" dishwasher detergent capsules, which claim sparkling results using fewer harsh chemicals.

The packaging greeted me with a big smile!

Had overnight guests, so will try one on a load of brunch dishes/pots/pans later this morning and report back.[this post was last edited: 5/18/2014-07:19]

Capsules come wrapped in foil, which, of course, must be removed; but the capsule's plastic casing is so thick compared to Cascade's pacs that I thought it would need to be removed, as well. Fortunately, I read the instructions before tearing into it.

Having used Finish Powerballs back when I had the LG, I'd forgotten how little I miss having to unwrap a pac before putting it in the dispenser.

It is not a tightly packed capsule. The powder inside moves around when you shake it.[this post was last edited: 5/18/2014-09:45]

I used one of my samples about a week ago when we had poormans lobster and rice for supper. It did a very good job on the rice kettle, and there was no trace of fish in the other kettle either. There also were breakfast dishes that had dried on egg yolk on them. Everything came out sparkling and very squeaky clean feeling.

I got the sample recently. Used one a couple days ago, load included a 13"x9" Pyrex in which lemon-seasoned chicken breasts were baked and the funnel from my iced tea maker. Surprised that the tea stains were gone, usually requires Cascade Institutional w/Bleach to effectively handle tea stains. The Pyrex appeared nice at first glance but closer examination revealed some grease residue remaining on the side walls. However, that is not to say the grease would have been 100% removed by either Cascade Complete w/Enzymes & Phosphates, or Institutional Cascade. Comparison of a similar item and soiling situation from one load/run to another is not exact due to the numerous variables involved.

Oh.

I got a sample of this at Costco.........Everything came clean but there was dried oatmeal still on a couple of bowls, which never happens with the institutional cascade or the Finish powerball.

Regardless of the brand of pod I used

Be it Cascade Platinum (the best in my GE machine) all the way down to the budget Ajax pillows from Dollah general, every brand struggles with dried egg yolk. In fact, I often have to place a spoon or so of Finish® powder in the bottom of the machine along with a pod or pillow in the main wash just to get some half assed decent cleaning.

Ever since the phosphates were taken out, performance has declined dramatically.

Here's the brunch load from this morning. Nothing too challenging as all the pans are nonstick. The bowl in the front left corner had dried pancake batter on it. The flatware is crammed tightly into one of the small detachable sections. Didn't use the other two section of the basket; wanted to save space for other items.

Used the Normal cycle with water temp boost option. The little graphic next to the cycle time shows that both racks are being washed. (You can choose to wash lower, upper, or both racks on any cycle.)

All items emerged perfectly cleaned. Since several mentioned sudsing issues--I have softened water--I opened the door a couple of times during the main wash to check. Absolutely no suds; the scent was very pleasant.

Will use capsule #2 on a tougher load tonight at supper. No nonstick pans.

I was concerned how fast the tab-pac would melt. The cycle used runs a prewash, prerinse, main wash, after-rinses. Tabs won't fit in the dispenser so I placed it under a bowl on a side shelf. Approximately half was left, including the red ball, at start of the main wash. I did not purge the water supply before starting.

I don't purge the hot water line anymore, either. This is the first dishwasher whose manual didn't recommend doing it. Haven't noticed any loss in cleaning power compared to the LG or Maytag when I purged the line before every load. And I'm not adding 2 gallons of water use to each cycle by running water down the drain. These new enzyme-laden detergents seem to prefer cooler temps.

@eugene

Are your non-stick pans Dishwasher Safe? Or, do you just wash them anyway? I ask, because, there are times, I'd like to throw them in, but, I've always been scared to death they'd get destroyed.
