hey all question who has gotten a new side by side fridge in the last 3-4 years? my 25 year old kennmore that i had kept a service agreement on for years cause it was cheap through sears, has a deadly issue. four years ago it quit cooling and sears came out and put in a new comp along with both fans for the cond and evap and got it running like a champ again.. that was great then on there last paid for check over the service guy broke the ice chute so now with it leaking air the ice maker and chute freeze up and then the door gets stuck and all that. parts are no longer avail, i have even tried to get parts thats a dead end. so sears said they will give me back what i paid for the machine all those years ago and thats great (900 bucks) so i have been researching new side by side units and want either a ge or whirlpool. have read blogs and reviews all over the net both seem like decent machines. so the question is does anyone have a new ge or whirlpool side by side and if so how would you rate and review it??

ge and pool are still built here thats why i look at them. the ge has so much better fit and finish. i know 5 people in the last 5 years that have had lg and of those 3 compressor fails at 4 years and 2 elec fires due to wire and led issues. so .. i just hate to give up the old girl she is such a good running machine. sears will give me 900 for it towards a new machine but they want to old one back to crush it. seems sad

I second probably to avoid LG and Samsung although everyone I know these days seems to be getting those brands because they are "top of the line."

Probably GE and Whirlpool should both be ok. Frigidaire sells probably the most affordable affordable side by sides I've seen, but I don't know how reliable they are.

It's a shame the old one can't be fixed. Most likely it's better than anything you'll get now. Honestly I'd rather get used appliances than new ones at this point, I feel like they'd last longer.

I like the GE

I still have my 1996 Whirlpool S/S, but I have been looking. The new Whirlpools in the lower price range do not have adjustable shelves. The GE does. That is enough difference to make me want the GE. I kind of wanted the 29 cu. ft. Whirlpool but that has the in the door ice maker and the salesman said there are problems with that unit.

Glad WP & GE are still endorsed in a way. I'll need another 33" wide bottom mount. My 2006 Kenmore Elite (LG) is rated at 22 cu. ft. Comparable size GE is now 24.8 cu ft. I can use the additional 2.4 cu ft. Although, I have to admit, I like the LG's interior space and arrangement.

Due to arthritis issues

IE having trouble cleaning the oven and twisting ice trays at times, We bit the bullet and Donald bought me all brand new appliances, I bet no one would think me of all people would ever use new appliances, but i have to say, i really like them, The range has convection bake, which i like, the smooth top really heats evenly and quickly, the 25 cubic foot side by side is very quiet and is easy to work with and the dishwasher is quiet and never leaves a speck, and i rarely run it on any cycle other than the 1 hour cycle, love the bottle jets, i can turn a sticky dried up mixing bowl over one and it comes out spotless. We have a local furniture store we deal with and they are the best.

Hans, I'm sorry to hear of your arthritis. But I am thrilled Donald stepped forward and rescued your ability to continue to contribute your culinary expertise. I'm gathering all new were GE brand?

I'd stay away from LG and samsung fridges. the LG's are known to have compressor issues, and samsungs have issues with the defrost drainage, among other things. whirlpool/maytag/kitchenaid are good, and ge was good, idk about now.

I have had 2 Whirlpool sxs and they both made it to 11 years then things started going wrong and died. I have replaced both of the with Frigidaire. The 1st one don't know if still running was in a house I sold. That was 11 years ago. The 2nd one I just replace a few months ago. Hard time finding a white sxs. Found some at Lowes. Has been running making ice keeping the freezer at zero. Not as many bells and whistles as the Whirlpool, but it is doing its job. Pretty quiet unit. Give it a plus.

Well

Another reason is my vision is to the point i cant see the fine print on diagrams to work on stuff anymore, But i really do like my new GE stuff, I have to admit the quality is much improved over a few years ago, or it seems so to me

This reminds me.

I have a '48 GE single door fridge that's been sitting in my garage for the past five years or more. Sold to me for song by a neighbor who was moving out. Maybe for nothing. Can't remember! He said it worked fine. It needs a new door gasket. I have the material, just haven't got around to it yet. The exterior also could use sanding, primer, and new paint. Probably should do that before the gasket is replaced.

Very little plastic.

thanks so much for the info. ill go for the ge. i took the ice chute apart on this fridge cleaned the ice blob out and the whole ice maker and ill give it 2 weeks to see what happens. but i can see its already starting to frost up again. ugg.
