New Frigidaire Pair On Order!

As the bearing roar on my 8-year old Frigidaire front-loader is getting worse with each load, I took a deep breath, went to my local dealer and ordered a pair of the new Frigidaires.

I looked at the LG 2050 pair at my local LG/Whirlpool dealer, and they're an attractively-priced set. But when push came to shove with the checkbook, I decided that for an extra $300 I'd get many more features (including steam injection) with the Frigidaire.

Unfortunately, I now have to play the waiting game. The Frigidaire/Maytag dealer
just received a shipment of 18 items a couple of days ago. They won't place another order with their distributor until they have 15 pieces to order. In a small store, this could take a month or more, especially since summer is their slowest sales period.

I looked at the prior Affinity line and at a couple of Maytags that were on the floor, but I really want the newest-issue Frigidaire.

And here's a link to the dryer. It is mistakenly listed at the Frigidaire website as a gas dryer. It is, in fact, electric. I called the company to make sure, then suggested they get someone to correct the website error.

It has an interesting steam feature: You can inject steam into a load prior to the cooldown in order to reduce wrinkling. It also has the usual Steam Refresh-type cycle.

NEW FRIGIDARE WASHER AND DRYER

Its very hard to break out a bad relationship I guess this is just human nature. I know there have been times in my life where a got a bad deal at some store or another and low and behold when the time to purchase something again came around I would find myself thinking about going right back to what caused the first painful problem. Fortunately I usually mustered the strength to resist repeating the mistake. While Frigidare washers and dryers do have good value I would put them at the absolute bottom of the list for long term durability.

Best of Luck Eugene. I saw pcrichard had one model in their store. Seemed like a more durable machine than previous models. The only thing I dont like is these new models have a tinted glass door. I also want to find out more about the Max fill feature. I am hoping it adds more the a cup of water! I know a few people that have the affinity and they are very happy with them

I read over the owners manual and it looks like it has a well thought out set of programs. I really liked the door latch prop to keep it open to prevent odors. So many people have no idea that leaving the door shut on any front load washer is asking for trouble!

Please post pics / videos once you get the machines!

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I'm excited about the purchase; it's too bad I'll have to wait for who-knows-how-long to actually get them installed. I'm not a good "waiting" person. This will be a character-building experience. It will also give me time to sock away some $$ to pay for them, LOL.

John---My current set is 8 years old, and it's by far the longest I've ever kept a washer and dryer. I actually gave some thought to having the bearing replaced, but I didn't want to spend a lot to repair a machine that has a comparatively small tub and is far behind what the latest technology has to offer. I also hate my dryer, so I'm really almost as excited about the new dryer as I am the washer. If the new washer should burn through a bearing in a few years, I'd probably be more inclined to have it repaired, as it will have many more features than my current washer.

Peter and Mark---This is the first time I've purchased a washer and dryer sight unseen. I'll be in Mankato this weekend and will try to scope one out at Sears or Lowe's (or a Frigidaire dealer). It will be interesting to see how much more water Max Fill actually involves. Were I a betting man, I'd wager probably not much.

Doug---Anything that reduces wrinkling gets bonus points from me. I used to iron all shirts and pants, but I don't care to iron much, anymore. We'll see if the steam options really make a difference. I think having a 7.1 cu. ft. drum instead of a 5.7 will make the most difference in that department.

Kelly---I'm going to let the dealer take my old set. He can resell them if he wants to. He's giving me a good deal on the new pair, and I don't want to sell my problems to someone else. I am going to keep the Frigidaire top-loader, as I still like to watch the indexing tub on occasion.

Andrew---I printed out the owner's manual and read it thoroughly before making my decision to purchase. I love to read owner's manuals. The internet is a wonderful thing, LOL!

Nathan---The Stain Pretreat option is, indeed, a true profile wash! It starts with temp-controlled cold water, then heats it during the wash portion of the cycle. It will probably be the most-used option, as I wash a lot of big loads of highly-stained kitchen whites.

I have a four year old Frigidaire 2140. Trouble-free so far, with excellent performance, but when the bearings or spider goes, that'll probably be it (unless it's bearings only and the fix isn't much over $100). As you said, it would be one thing to spend money to rehab a washer with current technology and capacity (say, >4.0 cu ft) but my washer is 3.5. That was mid-size when I bought it in 2006 but now would be considered quite small.

Knowing the problem with aluminum spiders, I try to keep current on the latest models, in the event I am forced to buy a new machine on short notice. My most recent GE TL broke down, was fixed, but I was warned if it broke a second time I would be best to junk it. During the interval between the first repair and the second break down, I researched washers online and was ready to buy a Frigidaire when the GE broke down for good. In retrospect I should have laid out the extra $$$ for a 2940 rather than a 2140, because its two extra features are ones I would use frequently (ATC and variable delay wash), but otherwise the two machines are the same in terms of mechanics and cycles.

Due to my particular installation situation, I have to stack my machines in the garage (washer space is blocked by a steel pipe to protect machines from a car--house built in 1988 prior to advent of mass produced FLs) in the dryer space. As a result, I would avoid some of the taller FLs that are close to 40" tall, since a stack would result in controls nearly 6'8" off the ground. I'm not short but it would not be convenient. The new Frigidaires are still about (if I recall correctly) 36" tall, so they stack nicely, and derive their extra capacity by being deeper. Since this is not in a closet or laundry room with tight-fitting door, depth is not an issue, whereas stack height (and stackability, as some brands/models don't have stacking brackets) is a major factor for me.

Part of what's making the wait tolerable is that I have the Frigidaire top-loader and a dryer to use. I won't have to make trips to the laundromat. I got the set for $1800, which is what I would have paid for a TOL LG washer, alone.

The only thing I'm concerned about is having only two rinses. All the front-loaders I've owned have had a suds-kill flush before the first spin and three deep rinses.

My water is so soft that suds tend to be pretty tenacious. The cleanest-rinsing detergents I've used are Amway's SA8 (which I use for loads of bath towels, which hang on to suds unmercifully) and Persil Bio Powder (Unilever, from the UK).

Persil takes the checkered flag for clean rinsing, but I hate to spend the astronomical costs for having it shipped here, and it doesn't clean any better than Tide's HE line.

At any rate, I may be making use of the extra rinse feature a lot (called "Fresh Water Rinse") on the new machine.

I'm sure it will rinse well. It does have the "default" two rinses and the extra rinse for a total of "three rinses" right? I hope so. As for the Max fill, let's hope it's more than the LG's water plus option. From what I've seen, that wasn't very much more water. Let's hope it surprises us and fills up at least to the bottom of the bellow

Hope these work out well--and that "max fill" means more than "2 drops of water, as opposed to one"!

I'm not into betting, but if I were, I'd bet when these have bearing failure (or whatever), you'll replace them. Some sort of evolution will have occurred, and there will be new features, like a computer that reads your mind, automatically. (That could be fun--may be the only feature that could persuade me to buy new!)

That steam feature might help a lot--I have known people who've tossed a slightly damp towel into the dryer with dryish clothes, and have had good results with reducing/eliminating wrinkles.

YAY!!! My new washer and dryer have arrived....and are in the window of the appliance store. The owner's wife (who works the floor and does the books) called and left a message that they had arrived yesterday afternoon.

Unfortunately, they left for vacation this morning and won't be back 'til Tuesday. It was one thing to wait for them to be ordered, but it's pure torture to see them sitting in the store window and not in my laundry room!

They are a handsome pair. Frigidaire stepped up the design and added some chrome. The control panel looks more upscale, too. I've stopped by to press my nose against the window a couple of times already, today.

I should do laundry, but the "new toy" enthusiast in me wants to put it off so I have a bunch of loads to wash when they are finally installed. I can get by with bermuda shorts and a no-tuck shirt for a couple of days at work, right, LOL?! I'll certainly have a super-gigantic load of bath towels, by then. We'll see just how many that 4.4 cu. ft. tub can hold.
