Hotpoint have never been a low end brand. They had their lower end models, but were mostly mid-high end in the UK, alongside Hoover and Servis. Servis only became a budget brand after the 1990 Merloni take over. Indesit have always been the budget brand here, although a lot of their older machines were much more reliable and high performing than the newer ranges.
The high end brands were Bosch, AEG, Zanussi and Miele.
As I said, the newest Hotpoint range has proven to be a really decent performer and Indesit appear to be improving. Only time will tell with the reliability issues. But this just backs up the argument that a lower end manufacturer can offer a good machine. Compare the current Indesits with the diabolical Evolution range - the new machines are better in just about everyway. Without trying them, what's to say Vestel haven't got it spot on with these new Servis machines? I'm not saying they have, but I think it's important to remain open minded about it
