The design philosophy and price-point executions were hinted at in the first link that Kimball455(Harry) posted. I wasn't aware of GE's problems. Before any product gets made, they get plenty of opinions from the market they're targeting; we had all GE appliances in our last house(upgrades from the builders given)...and all were problematic after a couple years. I hope these are more reliable...along with affordability. The target market cannot afford to pay repairs if the warranties aren't great - or put up with annoyances, like we did, for too long. Repeat buyers need to come with Artistry. Thanks for the link, Cory.

I actually like analog and knobs and switches and things but I'm not opposed to digital, after all we sort of live in a digital world. I was just kidding about the clock being battery operated, but it still looks cheap and appears to do nothing but tell time. Maybe there's something I don't see.

Many years ago when I lived in the Duboce Triangle in San Francisco I rented a huge flat ($350/month!) in a building so old you could still see the gas lines in the ceiling for lighting. The landlady lived next to me, Mrs. Lucy Dew, a totally wonderful black lady. I still remember her telling me "honey, don't buy nothin that's cheap."

"honey, don't buy nothin that's cheap."

That is my philosophy (when possible). I believe in "pay once, cry once" meaning pay extra for lasting quality instead of buying cheap junk that breaks over and over.

I would say it's unlikely that the ranges are self-cleaning, since the analog clocks seem to be lacking any "stop"/"start" settings (or kitchen timer). I read on the GE website that the ranges are proposed to have a MSRP of $599, not sure if that would typically buy a self-cleaning range now or not. If you look at what's out there in the marketplace now, gas ranges that have a single, rotary oven control on the front panel (and not a digital control on the backsplash) are not self-cleaning.

I do like the resurrection of the "General Electric" name. I think the company lost a lot when they chose to just be "GE".

The unbuttoned shirt and loose tie is the "in" look

There are self-cleaning ovens for $599 in both gas and electric. I cannot believe GE would make a new line non-self-cleaning but with no other buttons or touchpad I don't see how self cleaning is possible.

The candidate running for the Mayor of Pittsburgh, Bill Peduto, has a chubby face and a monotone like the designer with the untied tie. I don't know how he is going to get elected or even how he won the primary looking like that. My mother even at her age (85)! would tell me to put something else on if I dressed like that.

Once I saw a young man who was dressed worse - he came out of church and had a gray open shirt, black undershirt, untied tie, gray dress pants and a baseball cap. So there can be worse out there.

Honestly, I've never had a self cleaning oven, so that is not one of the things I would really care about in a new stove. My main concern would be with how durable and reliable this new GE stove is - will it break in the next 5 years like most new stoves, including the "high end" Vikings many put in their McMansion wanna be houses?

Don't look for higher quality.  What I read said only the dishwashers would be produced in Louisville.  All other appliances would be produced in Mexico and Asia with everything else, for cost reasons.

GE ARTISTRY Self-Cleaning Oven Possibility:

To me, it seems the Temp. Control Knob should just have ONE Self-Clean setting, if they really wanted it "Simple"...!

Both Electric & Gas range models should offer that configuration!

As for the clock, it's likely the dial would just come out & a battery would simply be placed behind it, hopefully well-insulated from any heat! And a timer could be well-integrated with it, (though it would be a "Beep!", "Beep!", "Beep!" sort of job) but unlikely that the oven could then offer any Automatically Timed Shut Off or Delay Start setting...

Has anyone ever seen one of these?

Nope, but if that had been the house of my childhood, that little girl would have received a stern scolding for leaving every door on the fridges and freezers wide open. Except maybe the middle upper door, which might actually be a glass door.

Back to the new GE line: stating the obvious, perhaps, but it's not strictly necessary to have digital controls to have a self cleaning oven. The P-7 wall oven for example does a great job of self-cleaning with an analog clock. However, as Ralph pointed out, that would require an electric powered analog clock, as well as some additional knobs and such.

Perhaps the new range line will have that special coating one sees in some toaster ovens that claims to be self cleaning. Or at least sheds baked on foods. Don't think it could be non-stick though, as most non-stick coatings couldn't take high oven temps, at least not right next to heating elements or above gas oven burners. The new ceramic non-stick coatings, maybe.

Granted these are supposed to be tastefully designed but starter appliances for newlyweds. Until I bought my home in 1997 I can't remember ever renting an apartment, flat, or house that came with a self-cleaning oven. Never a dishwasher either, nor a fridge icemaker. Even self-defrosting fridges were rare, and that last place I rented, the self-defrosting mode didn't work right anyway. So what I'm saying is that this line is still a cut above the average rental unit stuff. Of course ice makers are generally the most troublesome part of a fridge, so most landlords would rather not have to deal with them. And some landlords seem to take a special delight in making their tenants clean the ovens themselves, doing a white glove test upon the tenant leaving, so that some of the security/cleaning deposit can be witheld ;-).

I am a landlord.

And I would seriously consider using these appliances, BUT...

My goal is to provide my tenants with a nice place to live. A place I would be proud to say was my home. I furnish my units with MOL appliances. Nothing too fancy, but some of the more desirable features. I do use refrigerators with ice makers, ranges with self-cleaning ovens, 1/2 horsepower garbage disposers, etc.

I like the looks and simplicity of these appliances a lot, but I don't know if they would meet my standards. A self-cleaning oven is a must. I would like to see a simple self-cleaning system. A slide lock on the door and a simple knob or pushbutton for "Clean." Lock the door, push the button, and let a simple control with a time-relay do the work. 1 self clean cycle of a pre-determined time. I'd also like to see a light for whenever the oven burner is on (light goes out = oven is pre-heated).

As for the fridge, I would prefer a top-freezer. The bottom freezer looks good, but I've had VERY poor luck with bottom-freezer refrigerators from most manufacturers, including GE. An ice maker is a must, but a dispenser isn't.

GE builds a decent dishwasher these days, so I doubt the dishwasher would be much of a problem, relatively speaking. At least many GE dishwasher parts are less expensive than WP equivelants.

Maybe I'm just crazy,
Dave
