Recently, I came across a J.C. Penney full size microwave, built in October of 1986, and listed on Craigslist. After a number of emails back and forth with the seller, I went to see the microwave, and ended up buying it.

There's a story behind this unit, for it is the same model that I bought when I moved to my first apartment in late 1986. The microwave that I originally had gave up the ghost a number of years ago, and not thinking that it was worth the repair, junked it.

The oven that I purchased came from a summer home, and therefor saw little use. Save for a few scratches on the front, it was very clean on the inside - not only a sign of little use, but a sign that the original owner took care of their appliances. It is missing the wire rack and temperature probe, but no biggie at that - I think that I used the probe on my original oven one time - for pasturizing eggs for a holiday party's egg nog. It came with owners' manual, and I have the original cookbook, so should I ever want to attempt putting it through its paces, I can - all functions work well.

I am not a heavy microwave user, so this won't see daily use. It's rated at 700 watts, and has easily handled anything that I have asked it to nuke. It rivals my newer, higher-powered Sharp, which it has replaced. I bought it for pure sentimental reasons, and I like the fake woodgrain cabinet over the slick, white box of the Sharp. It fits in well with the other vintage items in my kitchen.

One question...any idea as to what company made microwaves for Penneys back in the 80s? Am I safe in assuming that it was built by LG, seeing as its country of origin is listed as Korea. Just thought that I would see if anyone knows anything about these old ovens.

Thanks,

Joe
