New Oxyadol

I too am using the same version of Oxydol that Sandy currently has in usage.  It has been a good performer for me so far.  I add 2tbsp of STPP, ½cup 20 Mule Team Borax, ½cup BIZ, and 1 ½cups of Oxydol for an XL size load.  For the rinse it's a ½ capful of Suavitel "Field Flowers" softener.  I picked the Oxydol up on a whim when I was at Family Dollar a week ago.  I hope they keep it in stock for awhile because really I'm liking it, and even the scent isn't too cloying.

You beat me to the punch on this. I was at Price Cutter here in Springfield last night looking for Wisk, when I stumbled across this. The price their asking for it is either 4.48 or 4.84. I may give it a try after I use up the rest of the horrid Sears Ultra-Plus powder I have on hand.

I know Dollar Tree has the liquid Oxydol.

Bill glad you did.  That Price Cutter is part of Harp's.  I bought a box yesterday and so far 2 loads done.  I think right now it is a winner.  Have FL and by final rinse water was clear.

I don't quite understand the purpose behind putting an old name on a detergent that has no similarity to the old product. Granted, it was a good name for a product that had oxygen bleach in it, but as for a relation to the old product, the new stuff could be called pig polish and work just as well on laundry. I'm not saying it is not a good product, but its quality is beside the point. I just don't see why they are using the old name "Oxydol" for a new detergent. As for the Oxydol "classic," if it does not have the green specks in it, how can it be called "classic?" Back in its time, a detergent containing oxygen bleach was novel, as was oxygen bleach, but now not so much. I guess what I am trying to say is that a brand like Tide is still owned by P&G and this new Oxydol, like some other brands, was discontinued by its original manufacturer and now is sort of like a red herring, attracting you with a classic name, yet delivering something else.

Oxydol Liquid

I just tried some Oxydol liquid that I bought at Doller Tree and used it in my Speed Queen wringer washer. I used 4 capfuls to get some sort of suds. It is awful stuff. Never again. Gary

Does the bottle state that it is an HE formula? If nothing else, it might be good for treating spots and stains.

The Liquid....

....Works fine for me, but I don't particularly value sudsing. I use it for darks and brights that need cold-water washing to keep looking new. I have had no issues in use; it does exactly what it says it will, and it leaves clothes smelling good.

You have to remember that the sudsing of old detergent formulas would be not just undesirable today, it would be harmful to many of today's machines. Very, very few users of this liquid would be using it in a wringer washer - it's formulated for today's machines.

My experience is the same as Sandy's. It may not be great for heavy-duty cleaning, but for lightly soiled dark items it's an inexpensive choice that smells nice without being too strong.

I Also Like....

....The liquid for washing vinyl shower curtain liners. Hot water, liquid chlorine bleach and Liquid Oxydol get rid of all the soap scum, plus any mildew that might be present. I load the machine up, let it fill and begin agitation, and then turn it off so that the liner can soak for an hour. I then turn the machine back on and let it complete the cycle - gentle cycle, of course.

Leaves 'em looking new and smelling fresh and clean, but you only get to do it about three times per liner, because the plasticizers in the vinyl begin to break down after that. Probably something to do with the bleach.

This is SO much easier than cleaning shower doors! The last house had those, and never again. Ugh.

Yes,bleach breaks down the plasticizers in the vinyl and other plastics-to sum up DO NOT use bleach on plastics.I wash my vinyl curtains without bleach and they turn out fine.And you are like me--I HATE shower doors-curtains are much easier to maintain-and if the curtain is really dirty or mildewed-just toss it and get a new one.And shower doors may have another fear-I don't want to fall on one if I slip-A curtain is soft and won't break and cut you to ribbons!Also when I wash my shower curtain-if its winter-use the WARM water rinse-the winter cold water temp will cause cracking.If I had to move into a place with doors-I would rip them out and put in a curtain pole and curtain!

Thanks for the reminder that the warm rinse has to be used - I forgot to mention that.

So far as the degradation of the vinyl from bleach is concerned, I don't worry about it, because I buy cheapie liners. They are hung behind a nice fabric shower curtain, and don't show, so who cares as long as they're waterproof?

I also wholeheartedly concur with you about the dangers of shower doors. My late partner, who had end-stage heart failure, caused me no end of worry when he was still able to use the shower. Nothing ever happened, but oh, how I worried. I'm completely aware that tempered glass crumbles into small pieces, but where pieces are still sticking out of the door frame, you could get badly cut on the way down when falling.

I also resented Hell out of cleaning their roller and track system, plus the exhausting, nit-picky scrubbing effort involved in keeping mildew and soap off the vinyl gasket that held the glass in the door frame. I would say more about that, but then Robert would have to move this thread to the DL forum.

Yes,the shower doors are made of the tempered glass that would break into smaller peices-but yes,the peices in the frame that are like knives are scary.Some doors are a plastic material-don't like that either-what happens to those if you fall on them?Don't want to find out.My Moms house has shower doors-I now sort of worry about her and those shower doors.I just hope she doesn't fall while taking a shower and land into the door.And oh yes-you are right on the shower door tracks--you can NEVER keep them clean!ALWAYS a mess!And another thing about doors-if someone does fall in a shower that has them--it is more difficult for rescue personell or others to get the victim out of the shower.Curtains can always be pushed aside without problem-and more room.
