Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Tide HE

When my Persil supply runs low, I use Tide HE (HE = High Efficiency, mainly front load machines plus a few top load machines like Calypso that use small amounts of water compared to a traditional top loader). In general, you use regular old fashioned Tide in normal top loaders, and Tide HE in front loaders.

Tide doesn't clean or rinse out as well as Persil, but it's one of the best that can be easily purchased here (yes, you can buy Persil here at stores that sell Miele appliances, if you don't mind paying $50 for a box that contains enough Persil for 50 washes....).

Sears Ultra Plus HE detergent is believed by many on this board to wash as well as Tide HE (or better) at lower cost, but to buy it, one must travel to a Sears store. Tide HE can be purchased at nearly any supermarket or discount store (Target, WalMart, etc.). Ultra Plus is not to my knowledge sold outside of Sears stores.

Americans have been using Tide since 1946. Like Germans believe in Persil.

Here is a brief history:

"Tide

In the 1920s, Americans used soap flakes to clean their laundry. The flakes performed poorly in hard water, leaving a ring in the washing machine, dulling colors, and turning whites gray. Procter & Gamble began an ambitious mission to change the way Americans washed their clothes. Researchers discovered two-part molecules which they called synthetic surfactants. Each part of the "miracle molecules" executed a specific function--one pulled grease and dirt from the clothes, while the other suspended dirt until it could be rinsed away. In 1933, this discovery was introduced in a detergent called "Dreft," but it could only handle lightly soiled jobs. The next goal was to create a detergent that could clean heavily soiled clothes. That detergent was Tide®.

Created in 1943, Tide detergent was the combination of synthetic surfactants and "builders." The builders helped the synthetic surfactants penetrate the clothes more deeply to attack greasy, difficult stains. Tide was introduced to test markets in October 1946 as the world’s first heavy-duty detergent. Consumer response was immediate and intense. Tide detergent outsold every other brand within weeks. It became so popular that store owners were forced to limit the quantity purchased per customer.

Tide detergent was improved 22 times during its first 21 years on the market, and Procter & Gable still strives for perfection. Each year, researchers duplicate the mineral content of water from all parts of the United States and wash 50,000 loads of laundry to test Tide detergent’s consistency and performance."

Hey Mr. Wash

Have you tried the DASH over there? We used to have a detergent here many years ago called DASH that I used to love but they stopped making it. Have you used it? If you have, is it good? And how's the scent?

Vernel Crystals:
I can tell you about them, that's just expensive crap!
You put them in the wash, the washing water becomes milky with the strong scent of them and by the time rinses come, that is almost gone, I don't find them as effective as traditional softener, plus, for the cost I could buy 2x bottles of the classic Vernel I'm used to.

Vernel Crystals: I think I wanna try them one time, but if it doesn't work, I will use them as decoration aroung candles in a glass or as a freshener for the vacuum cleaner. You just have to be creative *lol*

@strongenough78: I haven't used the new Dash but I will buy this within the next weeks. The washing performance is not the best and not the worst. Origanally Dash used to be the only detergent with an integrated softener. Thats why it was called "Dash 2-in-1" back in the 80's/90's. Then, it vanished behind other detergents like Ariel and was standing alone in the laundry aisle. No commercials in TV - nothing. Last year then, it had a complete relaunch in the green box/bottle and the effect with the integrated softener is no longer.
I will give you a link to the website. This website is designed the same way as a website for Gain (I think it was Gain) some time ago.

Sunil

Have not bought any Sunil detergent for a long time, because they usually don`t get so good ratings, but will definitely try one of those with the Surf Small&Mighty look.
Who could resist to those beautiful bottels ? LOL

Thank you^^

By the way: Some months ago, Germany got its first eco-friendly liquid detergent (everyone knows that powder is way more eco-friendly). It is another Henkel-brand. The red one is for colored laundry and the blue one for whites:

The Softener update

Here's what's out at work:
The entire Downy Simple Pleasures line got a overhaul, with Waterlily (blue), Lavender (purple), Almond (beige), Spice (red) and Orchid (black) as the main fragrances. The Orchid fragrance also comes in sheets. The Suavitel Aromatherapy line has been overhauled, more sizes of Snuggle (new 96 oz.), and a Exhilarations Sweet Blossom/Pomegranate fragrance was introduced.

In the stain remover aisle, Tide Stain Release liquid (2 sizes), powder and pacs (10 and 18 ct.) are out too.

Clorox Greenworks Detergent just came out at Safeway

I tried the new Tide Stain Release...absolutely love it. I bought the powder and I am impressed. It ramps up the power of Tide and it took out every stain I had without pretreating. To me performance like that is worth the money.

Well, here in Germany the stain stuff from Ariel is not a highlight. Don't know why but it is just performing bad. Will stick to SIL.

The Softeners: What to pick and what not to pick

Well, I got to smell all the new scents, and here's my results.
Snuggle Sweet Blossom and Pomegranate - Okay scent.
Downy Simple Pleasures Almond Cream Bliss was great. Spice Blossom Dare and Orchid Allure were awful.
Suavitel Aromatherapy - Stay away. Smells awful.

It seems that P&G are using the same delivery system as their dishwasher tablets i.e. liquid and gel/powder in a little soluble pouch.

Downy Simple Pleasures

The fragrances are actually former SP, SP Radiance Collection and one (Almond) was a regular Downy fragrance:

Waterlily Radiance - Waterlily and Jasmine
Almond Cream Bliss - Cashmere & Silk Fresh
Lavender Serenity - Lavender & Vanilla
Orchid Allure - Black Diamond
Spice Blossom Dare - Amethyst Mist

New Downy and Tide Stain Release Pacs

I bought a bottle of the new Almond Cream Bliss and another bag of Tide Stain Release Action Pacs at work, as I was almost out. The Almond Cream Bliss scent isn't overpowering and makes the bedspread smell delightful. The Stain Release pacs work wonders.

Snuggle

We now have Snuggle Blue Iris & Bamboo Silk. Smells nice. Also there's a Snuggle Free & Clear. Sun's expanding Snuggle...

I plan to find out what the new Suavitel Aromatherapy scents are tomorrow.

Clorox Greenworks Detergent and Stain Removers came out at Albertsons this past week.

Greenworks

OK, so I got a $2 coupon for the Greenworks detergent and I figured I would give it a whirl and see if it did a better on body-odor items since it contained enzymes and came in a lavender scent.

It was, in a word, repellent.

It had an ~extremely~ strong odor of what I suspect would be a chemist's idea of what lavender should smell like in spite of having "essential oils" in it. It didn't really do that great of a job cleaning out general dirt, and the one body-odor item still smelled like BO dipped in artificial lavender syrup after I was done washing it.

I ended up re-washing that whole load just to get the smell out, and it still persisted on the clothes, in the washer and somewhat in the dryer after that. Needless to say, I took it straight back to Publix for a refund after a single load. I will use the entry form I found on the Greenworks display to enter for a free Whirlpool W/D set, but I won't ever buy this stuff again.

My $0.04...

New products

Well, the flood of products won't stop here in good old Germany.
Lenor softener had a complete makeover. Three fragrances were kicked out, two new were introduced.

The first ist called Lenor "Maya" from the mystery-series

This is the complete Vernel range including the new Vernel crystals. The shape of the bottles is different than before.

Marketing?

Honestly, I'll never understand marketing types.

So... what does the Maya actually smell like? The green and earthy jungle scents of a 1000 year old abandoned step pyramid? Or is there a better description of the scent on the bottle?

New Lenor

We have those 2 new Lenors in the UK also - the "Maya" one is called "Gold Orchid" and "Fashion Fuchsia" is called "Struck By Fuchsia" over here. :)

I must admit, that I hate all the fragrances of the Lenor mystery and energy range. I think that the new ones will not be an exception...we'll see (or better: smell)

Liquid Detergent News

King Soopers/Kroger introduced the Greenworks line, Gain w/Febreze Hawaiian Aloha, Tide w/Downy Lavender and a interesting one: Tide Coldwater HE. There's also a redesigned 150 oz bottle coming for the P&G detergents.
