Hello AW, friend of mine is looking for new range recommendations. Here's what he's looking for: GAS and convection oven for $900 or less. I don't know much about stoves but hopefully some of you guys can help him out.

The least expensive I can find with those qualifications is a Whirlpool.  the Whirlpool gas ranges I've seen do not allow for the surface burners to be lit when the power goes out.  GE does.  Their least expensive on sale is $899.

My mother has a Frigidaire gas range with convection fan.  She never uses the fan setting, but I do when I'm down there and cook for them.  It wasn't terribly expensive either, and the top burners can be lit with a match if needed in a power failure.

Bob...........

I do not know where you got that about Whirlpool gas ranges cooktops being unable to be used during a power outage, but I have been able to use my Whirlpool gas cooktop in a power outage with a butane candle lighter.

Yes Lawrence,

it's the same with my GE. If you have the control lock out set when the power fails, then the gas valves will not be open to light with a match.
If the range is set for operation, then the burners can be lit.
Maybe that is what appnut meant.
