New Speed Queen Frontloaders

Hi. I am now looking at the Speed Queen Front Loader washer model AFB50R. This model heats the water, has 3.3 cu ft capacity and uses 4.63 gal. approx. per fill. This machine is quite basic in that you cannot set the time. It has a normal cycle with a 24 min. wash, a Permanent Press at 20 min. and a Delicate, and Rinse and Spin and an Extra Rinse option. This machine is very rugged and solidly built. The model before this model was a ATS90AWN, had a much shorter wash, but used 7 gal. per fill.

I was just wondering if the 4.63 gal per fill in a 3.3 cu ft tub would be more water than a lot of the bigger machines that are out there today, like Electrolux, LG, Whirlpool and the like?

I got all of the data on the water usage from Speed Queen. Their customer service department is very nice to deal with.

Now.....I was just wondering if anyone on this club has one of these front load machines and if they like them.

Hmmm... Picture Thread?

Sounds like a good time to start a front loader water level picture thread. Everyone start you front loaders on the normal/regular/cotton settings with no options and no clothing. When the machine has added water and load sensing is complete. Stop the machine and snap a picture of the water level in the tub. Post accordingly. I am especially interested in the difference between the older model and new model Speed Queens myself.

Hey Malcolm..... I think we could take it one step further.... Put the drain hose on a 5 gal. or larger pail. Then you can estimate or pour off into gal jugs to determine the gallons.

BTW: Do you have a Speed Queen front loader?

I do not currently have a Speed Queen FL, but the model you are considering has interested me for a while. I would love to get my hands on a Service Manual for this model. Would make for some fun reading. I currently have a set of LG's that are OK, but I would trade them in a heartbeat for something more rugged.

Like a SQ or a Miele.

Hi Malcolm. I have an LG also and want to replace. What model do you have? I have the first one made with the rear controls.

You can go to www.speedqueen.com. They have operating manuals for these machines along with the installation manuals. These machines are built like tanks. They get the job done quick without all the drama. I mean...it is a simple machine, but what more cycles do you need than the ones that this machine has?

Both Lefever brothers have one (Combo52, Jeffadelphi). John sells them. Jason has a stack.
Those are great machines.
If I were going to go out and buy a new one it would be a SQ as you describe.

I don't know. It would be interesting to go on the different manufacturers web sites and compare statistics. Of course, I'm sure you could get away with a teentzie-weentzie adjustment if you feel compelled.

When a guest at John's I enjoy using his machine. I like the heat boost and the fact that it does not fool around when ramping-up to spin. My old FriGEMore must waste 10 minutes out of a whole cycle just trying to decide whether or not to ramp-up.

Hi Steve, When you used John's was there some spashing on the window while washing? Was his model AFB50R? Accoring to the literature, it only takes 45 sec to ramp up to spin.
