So now I have my new SQ AWN432 and it works pretty good...feels much more solid than the Whirlpool. Not quite like the original Maytag DC, but very close. Observations:

Quiet
Much quieter than the Whirlpool. The loudest point is the brake when it stops spinning. Agitation is smooth and quiet, and the spin, even when slightly off-balance is quiet. The Whirlpool with even the slightest out-of-balance was noisy.

Spin-Spray
Only one after the wash. None for the rinses. Oh well.

Spin Speed
Slow ramp-up and acceptable in the normal cycles. The delicate/hand-wash cycle spin speed is too slow. I'll likely end up putting delicates through a regular spin at the end of the delicate cycle.

Now, my real reason for posting...the installers tested the fill and drain, and informed me that I might hear a clicking noise the first few times the machine approaches full spin speed. As they were testing the drain it happened, a distinct CLICK.......CLICK.....CLICK...CLICK, increasing as the speed increased. They said it might happen once more, then wouldn't happen again. They were right, but I wonder why? Has anyone else experienced this?

NEW SQ WASHER CLACKING NOISE

The belt gets a slight flat spot from sitting in storage and it makes the idler pulley bracket make this noise till the washer has been run a few times, which allows the belt to round out again. It doesn't hurt a thing but it is a little disconcerting sound from a new washer.

Belt

A, so it's belt driven. I was wondering. I do sense a bit of a "metal" smell which I think is from the all metal transmission.

I'll have to take the front panel off and some point and have a good look around.

It's lethal!  Just a whiff and you pass out cold for 3 hours.  When you wake, you may or may not still have your kidneys.  And if your dryer is running next to the running washer, the vapourised metal will be sucked into the dryer and permeate your clothes.  Horrible and unspeakable things happen then when you wear those things.

Open *all* windows and doors to be safe...

Flat Spot

I would think that if it was a flat spot on the belt you would hear it during agitation as well.

The smell may be coming from the brake system. I think they coat it with some oily substance to protect it during storage/distribution. Once it burns off, it should go away.

Peter has inhaled more than his fair share of SQ metalic vapors, apparently!

NEW SQ WASHER CLACKING NOISE

Malcolm when the washer is agitating the motor is running in reverse and the idler pulley is pulled in the other direction and it does not make this sound. Remember that SQ uses the belt as the clutch as the machine drains and slowly gets up to full spin speed. The idler pulley is designed to give a lighter tension in the spin direction so it will not stall the motor on start up.

"thomasortega" is a knowledgable guy!

I really appreciate Thomas' insight and intelligence. He really knows what we are talking about. For example, in my honest opinion, who truly believes that a washer's "Sanitary Cycle" will leave laundry actually sanitary? Once washed laundry leaves a washer, or dried from a dryer, it is IMMEDIATELY contaminated by the atmosphere it enters, or by the fingers that touch it! "DUMMMM"!
