I was wondering if anyone has seen the new Surf black liquid or pods for sale. I have seen them on Asda's ,Sainsburys and Tescos websites but none for sale.None of the customer services have known when its coming in and even a quick call to Lever bros proved fruitless. My entire wardrobe is black clothing, so I was pleased to find out that something to suit had come out. I recently discovered Persil colour small and mighty, having always used powders in the past.
I had my neighbours in yesterday...a young couple in their late 20's . I opened my cupboard under the sink and she saw my 45 wash box of Persil bio..."how retro" she said..i didn't think anyone used powders anymore...it made me feel quite old!!
I didn't like to point out to her that my white wash is..well, white.. unlike what she hangs out claiming to be washed!! lol

Not seen...

The Surf "Perfect Black" yet. But I have seen the other Surf product that was launched at the same time; the "Vibrant Colours".

Not bought it though, as it has been £5 each time I have looked, and I can't see how the either of the products are going to be different to any OB free Colour Care Liquid.

So will probably give them a miss.

If I do see the Perfect Black Surf, will post on here.

I've heard a few people say that powder is old fashioned; even seen on various threads people have commented they wouldn't buy it :/

Shouldn't imagine their washes are that white either :P

If you've got a decent sized Asda nearby, it's £2.50 for the liquid right now. The black one smells quite nice too, nicer than the colour version I think. Sainsbury's have it for £3 but I think it's only in their larger stores as well. I haven't bought any as I know I'll never manage to get through a whole bottle of Surf!

Persil used to do Black Velvet, but they got rid of it after a couple of years. I wonder why they think a Surf version will sell? I don't really know what the difference between this and a colour detergent would be either, and it's a total mystery why the capsules are non-bio but the liquids are bio.

Non bio Caps...

Forgot about this Spoodles.

I really can't see how they're going to clean; liquid, so no bleach; meant for blacks, so no brighteners and to top it off NO ENZYMES.

So I really can't see how they're going to clean properly.

If I were to buy them would use them for maybe jeans etc. But for dark tshirts/underwear that is close to skin - NO CHANCE!!

Can just imagine it now, people bunging in a capsule and a load of darks on a cool wash with a detergent with no cleaning power.

In the wrong hands, these things are going to cause some stinky and ruined washing machines.

No oxygen bleach,no brighteners,no enzymes....So,special detergents for black clothes are plain soap?Fortunately, they aren't popular at all here in Greece. The only one I thing we currently have is Persil absolute black. I also remember Skip black velvet, but I haven't seen it in the last 3-4 years,so I suppose it has been discontinued.

Latest update

I have been to Asda Clapham Junction (big store)they don't have any and don't know when they will get it. I went to Sainsburys Streatham (big store) booked as in stock, but cant be found in store or stockroom!! Then, I went to Tesco, Sutton massive store...they don't have and don't know when they will!.
I, too am dubious for using it on underwear etc WHEN I finally track it down...until recently, I used Persil colour powder for darks, where I could prewash as well. I tried the persil small and mighty colour, because it was on special and love the smell. but it doesn't clean stains at all. despite its stain scrubber thing, a tshirt I had dropped some oil on, came out just as I put it in! This would never have happened with the powder and my Miele machine, but am still keen to try this surf black, so if anyone finds it,in south London, please let me know where!

"Shouldn't imagine their washes are that white eithe

Quite.

A neighbour's white socks and smalls, are definitely not white. Probably washes everything together, with a liquid or pod detergent.

At last!

YAY,... at last got hold of the last 3 bottles of surf black in Asda, Clapham junction! at £2.50 a bottle is so cheap...now to see if its any good!!

The same way all other non-bio liquids clean - high surfactant count.

A detergent must contain surfactants to actually clean. One reason why Persil non bio tablets are so poor is because they contain 15-30% bleaching agents but less than 5% surfactants. A load of bleach but no soap!

One of the reasons I like Ecover Concentrated liquid is because it has a very high surfactant count, so it's very good for cleaning darks as it's full of soap with no bleach or OBA's.

"A detergent is an effective cleaning product because it contains one or more surfactants. Because of their chemical makeup, the surfactants used in detergents can be engineered to perform well under a variety of conditions. Such surfactants are less sensitive than soap to the hardness minerals in water and most will not form a film."

Impressive

Today, I did my first black wash using Surf black. I am impressed with the results! I can be a messy pup...two of my tops had stains...one of oil of some sort, and one of baked bean sauce from tonights dinner!
I pre treated the stains with some of the liquid and put them on a 40 cottons wash with the "short" button pressed...1 hr 31 mins and reduced the spin speed down to 1100 rpm. I would usually use the minimum iron programme which is 1 hr 8 minutes, but following the instruction on the bottle, it said use a longer wash if possible.
Well, it did the job..everything came out clean and smelling really nice!!

Ingredients

5-15% anionic surfactants,<5% enzymes, nonionic surfactants,perfume,phosphonates,polycarboxylates,soap,alpha-isomethyllonone,amyl cinnamal,citronellol,geraniol,hexyl cinnamal,limonene,linalool,benzisothiazolinone....
all for £2.50 on rollback!!!...lol

Yep true Chris - just had a look at the ingredients, Persil Non Bio liquid capsules are the exact opposite of the powder ones - the liquid ones are 15-30% surfactants (obviously because there is no bleach).

Fairy's Non Bio liquid pods are slightly higher still, with >30% anionic surfactants.

Thanks for that ingredient list Michael.

Morrisons

I definitely did not know that. Although I buy a fair whack of detergents, I never really buy store branded ones.

May have to have a look when I'm next at a Morrisons; don't get to one that often, although I do like the one in Illingworth Halifax, but only get to it every 4-6 weeks or so.

Will say though (and I know you're not a fan though :P) Morrisons own brand fabric softeners are really good.

Illingworth Halifax

Liam, I had no idea you were local to me! Where abouts are you? I was in Halifax just a few weeks ago to check out the ADA/Philips display at the Calderdale Industrial Museum.

We have every type of supermarket local to us, it's insane. They're all within spitting distance of eachother!

I used to really like some of the own brand softeners, before I became a moderate-eco-nut lol. Tesco's and Sainsburys blue softener, which I think is actually the same stuff, was very nice indeed!

Haha...

I'm in Bury.

Mother in law lives on Illingworth Road (literally just round the corner from the Illingworth Morrisons).

My Grandmother also comes from Halifax (although she lives in Spain now).

Yep know Calderdale very well, Mrs comes from Todmorden.

I really like some of the own brands. Morrisons yellow one, and Sainsburys do a white one (called Gentle I think) - smells really nice.

Ah right,

Yes you'll be at the other side of West Yorks then (you'll be closer to North Yorks won't you?)
