Guess what the stork left in my front yard: Bunnies!

You'd think a 49-year old man who has lived the bulk of his life in small, rural towns would know more about how nature works; Unfortunately, that person is not me.

The first thing I did was freak out and pull all five of them from the nest, as my first thought was "I do NOT want a family of rabbits living in my yard!" Then again, I didn't want to kill them. So I put them in a box and took them to see my friend Travis, who is a small animal vet. He gently suggested that I might have left them alone, as the chances of wild bunnies surviving bottle-feeding are quite slim. At any rate, I bought a can of Kitten Milk Replacement and a tiny little bottle and decided I'd give it a try.

Right. They didn't want to drink from it. Then it began to dawn on me: How am I going to feed them for the required 3-4 weeks when they get bigger and don't want to be held? They are, after all, not a domesticated breed.

So, last night around 8:00, I put the bunnies back in their hole and covered it with the same grass their mother had used and hoped she would still care for them some time during the night, which I learned from the internet is when the mother generally shows up for feeding/caring.

I happened to look out around 8:30 and saw mama rabbit sitting on the nest. I could see her for about 20 minutes, but then darkness fell.

This morning I lifted the grass over the nest (now covered by a stick, as well; what a resourceful mom!) and they were all sleeping soundly, tucked in the hole just-so.

Anyway, here's a photo. I'm hoping their mother will continue to care for them and that one of marauding neighborhood cats doesn't discover the nest. But I've decided to let nature do its thing, and whatever happens, happens.

They are just too cute, I'll say that for them.

Adorable

They are too cute, as most baby animals are. I have a couple of ground hogs that live in my backyard, and I just love to watch them, but lately I have only seen one of them. I hope nothing happened to the other one. I would love to get a picture of them standing on their hind legs, but I don't think it will happen.

Just remember how cute they are when they chew your flowers and shrubbery to pieces. Rabbits chewed my wife's uncle's raspberry patch to ribbons this last winter, thus no berries this year. A trap is something to consider.

Tim---You're right, I run the risk of plant/shrub damage, but rabbits run around here quite a bit and none of them have chewed on anything....yet. Besides, it's the end of the season, so if my over-grown shrubs or some of my garden flowers get eaten, it's no big deal.

And I'm sorry to report that one of the little guys died during the day. I noticed, yesterday, that he was far less active than the others, so it's not a big surprise. Hope the others make it, but I'm being realistic. Nature can be heartless.

Mama rabbit came by to nurse last night around 8:30, but a watched pot never boils, as the saying goes, so I'm trying not to look out the window every 30 seconds. I've turned off my front yard security lights so she won't be startled by them.

JIM---Funny you should mention ground hogs (we call them woodchucks); A pregnant woodchuck was taking naps in my garden under a huge hosta, emerging only to feast on flat-leaf parsley. She didn't seem interested in anything else. A vet friend set a live trap in my backyard for a week, but she didn't take the bait. Haven't seen her for over a week, so I suppose she's given birth in a tunnel somewhere. Now THAT I wouldn't allow to happen in my yard. Cute (and she was) would have to play second fiddle to landscaping, LOL!

Awwwww!

Aren't they precious. I love bunnies, we had a nice little bunny in our front yard this year. She had babies earlier, and we saw the two babies playing in the yard. Thanks for the cute picture.

GROUNDHOGS

I'm thinking that maybe they had babies and that's why I only see the one. They are fun to watch, very skiddish creaturs though, any little noise and they are gone.

AWWWWWWW I want one soooo bad.. not to be crazy but I think you should send one overnight postage in a comfy cage with food and a lil water bottle. as my little sis and I would love it like crazy
