Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Got back about 1 hour ago with both. About 7 hours round trip. I was only interested in the refrigerator which I indicated when I called this morning in reply to the ad. After getting there I was told that the range would probably get scrapped and if I wanted it to take it. I hated hearing the range would be scrapped so I brought it home. I paid $125.00.

Both were still being used in a lake rental. I didn't ask if the rental was year round or seasonal. Fridge still had some water in it from defrosting. The deep cooking pot of the range was about full of cooking oil.

The trip went smoothly overall. There was some backup on I80 (Mass Tpke) both ways at Springfield area but not bad. We kept moving along slowly. Probably lasted all of 5 minutes.

Something that did get me nervous concerned the control panel of the range. It was very windy here yesterday. From here at home all the way out to MA. We stood the range up behind the cab of my truck facing backward. The control panel stuck up above the top of the cab. Highway speeds combined with a very strong headwind had the range moving a little. It couldn't actually tip over due to it being up against the top of the fridge which was laying down in the truck bed.

But then the control panel itself started to move and the joint at the bottom where it sits on the range started to open up. I was afraid it was going to come off. I decided it prudent to keep my speed in the low to mid 50s. As I got closer to home the wind died down so I was able to drive a little faster but didn't go over 60. So the trip back took longer than going out.

I'll post some pics as soon as I can.

Well I already have four other 40" GE ranges. A 53, 54 & two 56s. All those have double ovens. That's why I wasn't really wanting this one but I couldn't see leaving it to be scrapped.

BTW...The fridge has the foot pedal bar that stretches across the full width of the cabinet. I searched online today for images of 1956 GE refrigerators and see some had plain aluminum colored accents and others with copper colored. This one has copper colored scratch guards under the handles. Also the shelves, door storage bars, butter compartment door and full freezer interior are copper.

So Id like to determine the exact year of the range. The first # is referred to as Cat # rather than Model # and is D21-J1. Im finding the Serial # strange.
It's 8441760. No letters as usually found in GE Serial numbers to designate month and year. Any thoughts?
