This is truly great news. And wonderful!

In a time when the US is more dependent on the well-wishes of Europe and Asia than ever before, President Obama has done more to heal the wounds caused by eight years of the Bush#43 dictatorship and the arrogance of know-nothings than we could possibly have dreamed of.

This is good! Very Good!

This is more a collective sigh of relief than anything else. The global community is glad to see us step down, at least temporarily, from Bush's Nazi-esque foreign policies, e.g. "preventive invasions" etc.

Horse POO

How does a sitting President win a prize for something that the nominations went in two months before said President was even elected to office? And how does he win such award for policy that were not in place at the time of the nominations. Do these people on the committee have a time machine.

Just plain-o-poo to me. And who gives a flying dog F&%$ what Europe and Asia thinks of us anyway? That is unless we need their favors because we are another Trillion dollars in debt to them since this administration took office. That is not respect. It's prostitution, and Horse POO.

WTF? He hasn't done anything yet!

I would agree that this seems to be more of a statement towards the previous administration and their lack of diplomatic saavy.

And who gives a flying dog F&%$ what Europe and Asia thinks

From the Wikipedia article on US Public Debt:

"Despite the declining willingness of foreign investors to continue investing in US dollar denominated instruments as the US dollar fell in 2007,[20] the U.S. Treasury statistics indicate that, at the end of 2006, foreigners held 44% of federal debt held by the public.[21] About 66% of that 44% was held by the central banks of other countries, in particular the central banks of Japan and China. In May 2009, the US owed China $772 billion.[22]"

Thought I had better add

I never voted for, nor would I ever vote for Bush. So if anyone goes calling me a nasty name like Republican, I promise to wipe my messy butt on your favorite white towels.

Crazy....

He hasn't done anything worthy of it. I'm positive there was someone else who's lifelong work could have benefited from that medal.

Smoke and mirrors...that's all he is.

Martin Luther King

Was also so honored at the beginning of his work for civil rights.

America is dependent for oil on people who hate us passionately.

Thanks to the stupid practice of sending manufacturing jobs abroad, value addition is no longer the basis of American wealth.

Tolerant Chinese and Euro-bankers are.

The US military clearly said to Bush last year, if the NATO allies pull out of the Middle East wars, the US would have to re-institute the draft. At once. Most Americans don't even know that their allies are in there, in combat, helping them.

Culturally and as trade partners, the US needs friends. Why this hatred towards the rest of the world when things at home are so bad because of the "does not play well with others" mentality we just had the past eight years?

This is a good thing, a positive thing for America. All this complaining reminds me of the conservatives who were happy to see America lose the Olympic bid. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

If someone throws money at you, it does not necessarily mean they love you. Not knowing who your alies are is all the more reason to be distrustful.

Pantera, you know I love you this is just healthy debate. I would classify myself more as a moderate than a conservative/liberal. But watch it, your towels are perilously close to brown stripes.

W H Y????

What is sooo GREAT that he has done besides getting elected. Maybe in a few years MAYBE BUT NOT NOW! This brings the Nobel Peace Prize down so low my cat should use for a litter box. Personally I dont give a ratz a## what all or ANY of the over the ponders think at all!

I look at it like this

After 8 years of seeing America"s only friends and allies become increasingly upset with us, it is good to see the world trust and like the US again.

We don't see it in everyday affairs, but an America which is respected is far preferable to one which is hated.

Living abroad, I have seen just how far the US slipped behind the rest of the West in the last 8 years on all the things that matter. Having Europe on America's side again is a good thing. America stands for freedom, peace and democracy. Why not be happy that the American President is trusted to live up to that tradition?

I see this an an investment, a stretching out of the olive branch, an attempt on the part of people whom Americans need to get along with to reform our ties.

Who sent help after Kathrina? The Europeans, Israel and the Canadians. Not the Mexicans, not the Arab world and not the Chinese. Who is fighting shoulder to shoulder with the US in Afghanistan against the Islamic terrorists who are a direct threat?

Some people argue, countries don't have friends in a true sense. Well, maybe so, maybe not. The US does, however, have real enemies and having Europe stand with the US is a good thing.

IheartMaytag, speaking as a gay man, I am very disappointed Obama has not done more for us. Seeing how far behind the rest of the West the US has fallen in technology, industrial capacity, education, financial flexibility, jobs...all the things which make capitalism work, I firmly believe Obama is the best thing we've got going for the US right now. Heaven knows, nobody else is even trying to offer solutions.

It's nice to see America praised as a leader again.

The Nobel "Peace" Prize?

What's so peaceful about giving trillions of dollars to the abortion industry? I don't care what your religion is, or your sexual orientation, or your race, or your ethnic background, or your gender, or your political party. Any one in this day and age who supports abortion, especially with the technology we have today that shows infants in the womb, (thanks to GE) should not be given the Nobel "Peace" prize.
A peaceful person embraces life in all forms, and does not look to terminate it.
Just my opinion.

I am thrilled

and surprised by this!

I am glad our international reputation is improving. Guys (and ladies--)the world is shrinking. Beyond jet travel, and the internet....and most thinking people the world over are beginning to see how interconnected we all are....I am very happy about this.

I voted for Barack Obama, and I plan to vote for him again.

Email in my profile if you want to discuss it further with me.

> What's so peaceful about giving trillions of dollars to the abortion industry? <

Trillions? You misspelled defense industry.

People who whine about abortion are generally the same people who defend the death penalty, and the murder of a million+ Iraqi civilians killed by US/UK/UN sanctions for 12 years and in Bush's invasion.

Murder is murder, it doesn't matter what PC label one slaps on it.

The Obama hasn't really done anything yet except spend money and hope for results. Well, the economy did grow +3% last quarter.

Usually Presidents receive their Nobel Prize after they have finished their term as president.

I think that there are other reasons "behind the scenes" for this. Remember in this day and age if you critisize Obama for anything you are considered a racist.

And Obamacare hasn't even been mentioned yet.

I must interject

While I surmise a great many of us heaved a sigh of relief at his election (and yes, I campaigned for Obama) he has a daunting task ahead. Health care for all has been attempted since Truman's "Fair Deal" and, so far, has been blocked.

I do expect great things from our President, but let's give him time to accomplish them before we heap him with awards. He is human, after all, and in a rather untenable position.

Jeff,
Just so you know, I am against the death penalty, and I am also against the killing of innocent people in the war.
I agree with you...."Murder is murder." I am a 44 year old man, the father of three children, and a retired cop, and I am not whining...Just stating a fact.

A Country founded by a boat load of Puritans is very slow to change. Give us another two or three hundred years.

I feel the U.S. should be more Independent, and our addiction to oil is leading to our downfall. We have sold out our jobs in the name of profits for big companies and trades for oil. We settled for the quick fixes rather than the long term solutions.

I am happy that we are a little more respected than we were a year ago, but often as history will tell respect is not always mutual. President Harry S. Truman had a great admiration for Stalin. Stalin thought Truman a putz. Often one is admired by some, and thought a putz by others.

Thinking of China, Nixon opened the door to China. Bush Sr. puked on the President of China. Nixon as a President left in humilliation. Bush was a one-termer, but wasn't all that bad having learned at Regan's right hand. Hence, what foreigners think of you doesn't matter as it's this country you are supposed to be running as the President of the United States. When they start running for a popularity contest for other countries, there appears to me to be a conflict of interest at hand.

Agreed on that one!

As a nation, we must be more independent. By having a good manufacturing base, managing resources wisely, and using our incredible base of skilled people and natural resources.

A strong USA is good for a strong and stable world.

We make WAY too many policy misktakes - and every admin for decades has done so - because we are persuing a policy of 'realpolitik' to guard USA's supposed strategic interests.

Don't like middle east involvement? WE NEED TO GET OUT OF OIL. This will take a LONG time - and we've wasted 30 years. It was CARTER who said this.

But of course, the USA is happy to be, well, fat dumb and happy. "Oh nobody wants icky manufacturing jobs!" Huh? Most of the guys I know who is under 30 would LOVE a good factory job...lots of 'em over 30 too.

It is unsustainable to think that, say, the benefits paid to auto workers could continue - I could wish for a pension that good! - but what we have now isn't appropriate.

It is no surprise that workers throughout the developed world don't care about their jobs anymore. Their jobs, if they are lucky enough to have one, don't care about them.

He Was only in office 2 WEEKS

When his name was up for the NPP what how could he be judged for his actions in only 2 WEEKS!

Can it be

that the level of frustration with the way things are has reached the point that it doesn't matter anymore when something good or positive happens, we just get angry?

I strongly urge everyone here to consider just why they see it as a bad thing when the leader of the free world is honored after the US was a pariah for the last eight years...and a good thing when the President of the US loses his bid to bring the Olympics to the US...that is not the patriotism which made America great.

When we no longer can allow our political opponents any good characteristics, when we take joy at what is ultimately our own discomfiture, something has gone badly, badly wrong.

And, Hunter, yes, you are absolutely right. Energy independence is crucial.

I'm not going back to just lurking, but I think my involvement in this particular forum of the three is going to be scaled back quite a bit.

Agreed- Building bridges and extending olive branches is certainly admirable, but only a fool would count his chickens before they've hatched. Let alone buy said chickens.

Politics aside on this deal, what burns me up is that in many ways this is a slap in the face to those who have committed their work (and their lives) for causes more worthy than a showing of "good-intent" as part of their job.

If Obama had gracefully declined the award, the Nobel committee would still have gotten their message across, the cache of the award wouldn't have been so questioned and (IMHO) this rift would have been a lot smaller.

Comment...

AT LEAT HE IS TRYING!!! All Bush did was talk about " TURRORISTS'' as he said ,it will take a while to fix this mess we are in..give the man a chance, he is human not superman.

i personally think

it's a fuc#ing joke! he hasn't done a damn thing to deserve a nobel peace prize!

i think he's a joke himself! i am not an obama supporter and i'm not afraid to tell anyone that, in fact i do!

he's an idiot in my book!

I'm Bewildered !-- Obama ????

The Noble Peace Prize ?
Peace where exactly ?
Certainly not in Afganistan or Iraq !
Domestic peace perhaps ...lol .
I dont think so....

And I am not a conservative voter .Nor do I have right wing affiliations..
I truly believe that the Bush family are evil.
Also ,Tony Blair( British Labour Party ex PM.) is a war criminal.
( I voted for him in 1997 ) to my eternal shame.

Can someone please give me a justifiable reason as to why Obama has been given this "prestigious" award ?

Regards. Louis.

Panthera, when you said:

>that the level of frustration with the way things are has >reached the point that it doesn't matter anymore when something >good or positive happens, we just get angry?

I think you have hit the nail on the head.

Like it or not, not EVERYTHING Bush did was terrible, and not EVERYTHING Obama did/is doing/will do is awesome. Some of the policies of the Bush admin, like the research into biofuels, actually has tremendous promise.

And both parties are seriously at fault for the Patriot act, and the Obama administration's actions to extend it is inexcusable. The argument that members of both parties used - oh we didn't have time to read it! - is just ridiculous - how can you vote on legislation that you haven't read?

Perhaps one of the biggest things we have in decline in western countries in recent decades is...critical thinking.

Now, Panthera, tell me more about these 400 euro induction hobs ;-).

See below (and link) for what the Nobel committee is saying, but again I think this is more relief and/or a vote of confidence in Obama than anything else.

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2009

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."
