I have just finished up the last of my old Zout, the original unscented formula (Pre Dial). Just used my "new" bottle, it's the blue bottle formula. Boy does it stink! It gets the stains out, but leaves a really heavy scent. Even stays in clothes after a second wash. It's driving me mad, as I use fragrance free products. Anyone have suggestions on a product that works as well as Zout, and won't leave my clothes smelling like a cheap bottle of perfume?

I just wanted suggestions on other stain removal products from our knowledgeable friends. I've been using my really old stash of Zout for so long, "new" my blue bottle qualifies as old. Anyone used the new formula in the red bottle? Or have a suggestion on something currently available that does the job without scenting the whole load of clothes?

try shout or spray and wash.....they have alomst no real scent its very light and not overbearing, they havent yet put any perfumes in it.

Have about a 3/4 full bottle of the old "Zout" and to one, it has a powerful fragrance and can "scent" an entire wash load, but that is just Moi!

Try Spray N Wash stick, has little to no scent.

For lipstick, grease and other oil based stains, Fels Naptha soap (the vintage bars if you can find), works wonderfully and has a fresh clean scent.

How does one use the Fels? I have a nub of a vintage bar in the shower, where it's used if one gets into poison ivy. Been nursing that bar for years, wish I could find another bar of Fels with naptha to replace it.

Just dampen the stained area with warm water, then rub some of the Fels over it to make a lather, let the soap sit for a while then either rinse or put into the wash. Normally many stains will begin to shift before one's eyes as the petrol (Naptha) goes to work.

Remember Fels will work on stains that require solvents to remove; ink, lipstick, makeup, grease, oils, fats, etc. Do not use any sort of soap on tannin or protien stains, it will cause them to set and make harder if not impossible to remove.

As for finding vintage Fels, have two good sized boxes full of the stuff, not to mention another box of "Kirkman's Borax Soap" bars.from the 1940's.

You can find vintage Fels on eBay and often at estate sales. If you get stuck, drop me an email and we'll work something out.

shriek!

I thought I was the only one on the planet still using Fels-Naptha! Believe it or not, it's sold at my local supermarket but I haven't bought a bar in about a year. My area has a large Jewish population, could be it's in demand for those who keep kosher? I know there's at least one other laundry soap bar sold there too, can't recall the name. I gave up on Zout when they added the cloying scent, now I use F-N or Oxy-Clean with good results.

The new Fels is made by Dial Corp, and has Stoddard solvent instead of Naptha. Tried new,and much prefer the old version of Fels. The modern incarnation smells like Dial bath soap and lacks the other chemicals that made true Fels soap a laundry "detergent".

Besides Naphta, vintage Fels contains washing soda, fabric whiteners, and other good stuff laundrywise.

I used to live near the old Fels soap plant. Before the freeway was built to the Philadelphia airport, we used to go past the factory. It smelled like Fels naptha soap. There was a giant box of Instant Fels Naptha on the side of one big building. Then Dial bought the company, closed the plant and moved production elsewhere. You can still go the Fels Planetarium at the Franklin Institute in Philly.
