About a month ago I bought an Ipad II.  I'm comfortable with DOS, 90% of Windows versions, Linux and the Android system and wanted to learn a bit about Apple's OS.  A month in I guess I'm not too impressed, even thinking about getting rid of the Ipad for an Android tablet.

 

Anyway I plugged my Ipad in to charge today and happened to feel the charger after it had been charging for a while, it was not warm it was down right hot.  I've got a lot of chargers around here and they do get warm but this was hotter that a hot cup of coffee in my hand.  Called Apple support, after a few minutes got a tech, told him the problem and he went to text his supervisor to determine the course of action.  After a few minutes he returned , apologized, and told me his system crashed and he did not know when it would be back up.  He also said he lost all my information and I would have to call back in a few hours or so.  Not the best first impression dealing with Apple support.

 

Anyone want to share their thoughts on Apple products?  One of the first things I did was hack the Ipad to see behind the curtain.  i find the Ipad intuitive in some ways but in others almost clumsy.  One of my cousin's has a couple;e of Asus Transformer pads , may play with them and see if i prefer them over the Ipad.
 
Me. I just don't get it

The other half bought his first tablet, a new Ipad a couple of months ago as well as upgraded his phone to the latest IPhone. I haven't had a cellphone since I retired 5 years ago and don't want another neither.  However in the name of science and all that is holy I have tried them both out and that's why I say I just don't get it.  The Iphone screen is too tiny to be useless in my book and the IPad taint much better, annoying for me always having to keep sliding your finger on the screen, tapping here, tapping there, making things bigger, wasn't a fun experience sitting on the couch or outside on the patio trying to read stuff.. meh.

I haven't done much more than play with either Android or Apple's iOS on store demo models. Based on my experience, I'd say I could live with either. If I were to buy into a smart phone or a tablet, the decision would be based on factors that go past Apple vs. Android. With a phone, for example, a big question is the cost of phone service. At this point, I don't have a compelling reason to seriously consider buying any of the above.

I have had some experience with somewhat recent Apple computers. I was quite impressed by the Core2 Duo MacBooks. They seemed to be solidly made, and had one of the few tolerable keyboards I've encountered in a laptop. I have never owned one, so I can't comment about reliability.

OS X (the OS used on Apple computers) is, to me, preferable to Windows in any shape, form, or color. But my current modern OS is Linux-based. While I might consider OS X, there would need to be good reason to consider coughing up the sort of money required.

One huge irritation I have with Apple in general is how short lived their software support is for older hardware. This is good for Apple, since it strongly encourages the faithful to upgrade. But I prefer to keep technology as long as possible. And if I'm spending real money (and Apple, even used, is not cheap), that desire to keep something going as long as possible gets even stronger.
 
I'm a techie, so I like lots of gadgets and use most of them often in ways not intended -- but that is half the fun.  One thing that has really annoyed me with Apple is they are dictating for format of my password.  Much like Linux to  add or change anything on the Ipad you have to enter the password.  They dictate that the password MUST have at least one capitol letter and one number.  I'm the only one to use my Ipad, and it never leaves my home, so I should be able to use "x" for a password if I like, but no.

 

I like the way the Ipad responds, it does have a very good "feel" to it, and the format is easy to hold.  I'm tempted to sub a newspaper and see how it is reading it on the unit, I had been reading a local paper on my laptop and it was not too bad, but a bit awkward due to the need to hold the laptop, the Ipad might be a good solution for that.
 
Cell Phone

Have to admit didn't really bother until about two years ago when family keep one about my not having one. Even then really only have it on when driving or otherwise out of the house. The former sees the most use as it is good to have a cell phone when out in the car in case of an emergency. It also is good for when collecting someone to say "I'm outside and we're loosing daylight, let's roll..."
 
Apple/Mac products are all I've ever used. I'm not a techie, and the ease with which all their products work together (iPhone, iPad, iPod, Macbook Pro laptop, iMac) is something I appreciate. They're expensive, but I've never had a problem with any of my Apple/Mac products. I keep hearing my friends grouse about Windows "crashing"---have never had that problem. Have never had a virus issue.

I love my iPad 2. It's always with me. I've come to love the touch screen, and often find myself reaching up to touch the screen on my laptop and iMac, LOL.

Sorry you've had bad luck with your first Apple encounter! I've had nothing but fantastic service from their tech support.

But...to each his own. Some people grow to love Macs, others loathe them.
 
Hi Matt,

Were you using the Ipad Charger rather than an Ipod/Iphone Charger?

The Ipod/Iphone Charger is rated at 5W
The Ipad Charger is rated at 10W

When I use the Ipod/Iphone charger with the Ipad it gets hot to touch, using the Iphone charger causes no issue.

Just a thought.

I only have the charger that came with the Ipad, so I would guess it's the standard Ipad charger.  I did a quick search and found a few people with the same issue, Apple replaced the charger for them and they were happy.
 
I love my Iphone 4 like a child, for all it can do, but sometimes want to throw it out a window when it chooses to malfunction. Twice now I have had to have it repaired, once to replace the charging plug on the phone, as it would no longer charge. Was told this was apparently corroded pins, due to high humidity in Louisiana, (its former home), and Kentucky, (it's current home). And just today, had to have it repaired, as I could hear people during a call, but they couldnt hear me unless I kept shaking the phone. Guy at the shop said he found a loose wire Apple products have amazing capabilities, but I dont think they are built to last much longer than the wait period between contract upgrades when most people get a new version.
 
I have to say I'm not a fan of the whole i crap phenomenon some of the products are pretty good but the corporate control freak mentality does my head in ,so guess I just stay safe in the land of Linux and not drink the coolaid ( or is that I coolaid )

I've really enjoyed my MacBook Pro (2011) and iMac (2001 and chugging along until December when I decided to gut it!). And I use my iPad daily as a paper replacement... as a college student it's invaluable to me. I can take handwritten notes, view handouts, answer email, do assignments, and entertain myself, and the darn thing weighs less than 2 pounds. And for the few things it can't do my trusty MacBook Pro picks up all the slack. Color me satisfied. I've never had to use Apple's customer service but I've heard they go out of their way to please. Our campus has 2 retailers located near where I walk to class every day so if service was needed I wouldn't have far to go.
 
I actually had to replace my entire iPhone when nobody could hear me calling them on it unless I used the Blue Tooth or the headset!

At first the new phone didn't even seem like "the same phone" and I wondered if the old phone had a "door" to immediately use the camera right away; I never noticed it, but it does make the phone easier to take pictures (my daughter BROKE our real camera, too!--Grrrr!)...

Dadoes: Can I have it? :-)

So far, we've deployed over 1000 iPads. Love them. I think we've had 2 defects in the entire run so far. One wouldn't charge, other had a line on the LCD. iBooks, all the equipment for collecting test data, simple web use and light word processing, inventory and help desk management. Wouldn't give them up for the world. The teachers keep coming up with novel uses for them. Cheaper than laptops and easier to maintain.

My partner had an issue with his out of warranty iPhone. Apple gave him a brand new iPhone 4s. Pretty sweet deal. If you had a problem with a bad adapter, take it to the Apple Store, if there is one close. They'll swap out anything that gets too hot like that. Liability is too great after the great Sony Battery Recalls of '06.

Apple power adapters are generally built to VERY good specs by comparison. They occasionally mess up, several broken ones in a run of millions. If its under warranty, should be no biggie. I can't find the article I saw not too long ago comparing Apple and other adapters. Some of them are downright scary.

My thoughts on Apple products?

3 years on Dell equipment in the classroom before we are shoveling it into the recycle bin. HP won't even show us real computers, just last years reheated crap. Average of 2 deployments on Apple hardware, 6-7 years before the scrapheap. Dollar for education dollar, the Apple costs LESS or the same as the exact PC hardware. Without even using special education models with lower price points. Yes, really. The days of Apple costing more are long gone. I quote hardware all day and I see it in real life.

Apple equipment does more (runs both Mac and Win7 at full speed, natively) and lasts longer in the classroom and in the teachers hands. Apple is more durable. Dell Latitude laptops fell apart in classroom use in under 3 years, keys missing, screen hinges falling off. Apple equipment gets scrapped when its technologically obsolete, not because its worn out.

Yeah, I am a fan. Goes all the way back to my Apple ][ days. Even have an original Apple ][, built 1976, a year older than me! That notwithstanding, we couldn't support our user base if it was anything but Apple, or mostly Apple as we are becoming.

grumpy old man, part II

My buddy keeps pushing me to "upgrade" from my trusted Samsung slider. I've tried his Iphone out, HATED IT! I'm usually pretty adaptable, but there's too much going on with those dern things.

I've gotta stick with Launderess on this one. The thing is convenient for "on the go" calls and the occasional text.

Pete, shall we star in the remake of Grumpy Old Men?
