When I read this I can only figure that the godly men (and surely they'e all men) at Osservatore must have found their image of modern women from our much-loved Picture of the Day collection. Smiling and radiant indeed as she pulls a box of Tide out of a spanking new Kelvinator, or perhaps amazed at how the GE Filter-Flo saves pink sweaters from linting up. I doubt that they like the Dash detergent POD however, given that while the woman might be radiant she also looks dangerously over-liberated, something to strike fear into the hearts of the devout. Goodness knows, she might have even chosen and paid for her own washing machine!

As per usual the Vatican sticks it's nose in to things and somehow gets it wrong. If I was going to identify any one thing that "liberated" or put women on the road to liberation, it's something that that shriveled old man knows very well -- WWII. Men where off to war, women took up the slack, did the work, and found they were perfectly capable of taking care of themselves.

1- Women were liberated when MEN started to use washers, without shame.
2- True liberation came when the Vatican agreed that girls could (i.e. were allowed to) and should (i.e. it is preferable that they) go to school.
The Vatican did more to thwart science, education and free-thought than many other fine instutions. They should learn to STFU, stay out of politics and work on becoming a more spiritual instituion, IMHO.
