I keep a little black book, and more than once it's gone through the wash. As long as it stays in the back pocket of the jeans or slacks, however, it generally doesn't get too torn up in the Neptune, and in the past I've been able to dry them out and retrieve the information before replacement.
I used to wind up sending spare change and even screws and nails through the washer. But now that I work in a machine shop, I generally empty the pockets of metal chips before I wash the pants, so any change or fasteners are usually ejected prior to laundering. The Neptune seems pretty impervious to coinage, thankfully, anyway.
Like most people I've occasionally lapsed and sent a pen through the wash. Again, generally it's not too bad if the pen cap stays on in the wash. But once I didn't catch the ball point's presence until it had liberally anoineted the inside of my WCI gas dryer. Probably an improvement.
