Goldman Sachs sees further weakness for oil due to the worsening of already weak fundamentals after OPEC held back from cutting production at its recent meeting.

The investment bank is standing by its prediction of $20 a barrel bottom—the breakeven cash cost for highly levered high-cost US shale producers. If oil prices fall below that level, companies will have to make output cuts in order to avert losses.

Even though global oil stock will remain below storage capacity, Goldman said the rebalancing is "far from achieved" as U.S. rig count and exploration and production guidance are "too high" to achieve the required supply decline.

OPEC is also likely to pump aggressively toward the high-end of Goldman's 32-million-barrel a day forecast as Iran resumes productions after U.S. sanctions are lifted over the next few months.

Oil storage also runs the risk of hitting constraints by next spring.

Oil prices have fallen over 50 percent in the last 18 months due to burgeoning energy supply and slowing demand.

"The post-OPEC oil price decline accelerated as the discord between members became more apparent and the lack of a supply response more certain. The meeting confirmed our view that it is not in OPEC's interest to balance the market in the face of still growing higher-cost production," Goldman Sachs analysts wrote in a report Thursday.

OPEC's resolve was strengthened after U.S. production picked up once prices neared $60 a barrel this summer, they added.

The group of 13 oil-producing countries has kept its production ceiling around 30 million barrels a day for years, with kingpin Saudi Arabia standing firm against an output cut in order to maintain market share and drive higher cost producers out.

"Despite the fiscal challenges that low oil prices create now, the alternative of cutting production reduces long-term revenues instead," said the Goldman Sachs analysts.

$20 - wow, that's a huge hit to many countries that need pricing around $100 to meet their budgetary spending commitments. Big producers in the mid-east will be fine, coasting on their reserves, but others like Russia will take a huge hit to their economic output measures that in the long run will stunt growth and power.

I guess the "all in" strategy for U.S. energy production was indeed tangible "hope and change", so quickly mocked by those with no better plan.

I filled my Honda for $19.50 the other day at Costco, $1.84/gal.

The Gold Man Sacks...how appropriate

I always love Goldman Sachs...

Get on the wrong side of a trade...and they beat the wardrums so others play into their game.

Yes, 35 as I said for months...but 20...I'll guess we wil see.

This week, Hedge Funds dropped all their losing trades for the last Q4...
Over the last 12 quarters, hedge funds have made less than the S&P average,
and evern day traders such as I.

They just can't believe the market wants to climb higher...and everytime they bet against the market...pow, right in the kisser...we (the average investor) buy the dips.
Why...no where else to put your money...
So, even safe investing buying Divy Stocks, just keeps pushing us higher.

Does anyone else love that Name?

Dear Sir,...

That's why that Maytag is coming unglued, piece by piece...

You're a VW kind-of-guy??

A Maytag needs total commitment, total love, and undying-unrequited Love.!

Either get rid of the VW rattler, or tell the Maytag you "wish you could"...

Everything will be as one with Harmony then...

LOL well I gotta say my 2000 Golf TDI has been great to me. Wrecked twice and put back together with used parts by me but she still keeps on going. Ive owned it 13 years. Best $9400.00 I ever spent. I use it like a truck hauling all these old Briggs engines and mowers around. Its been a faithful friend along with my 84 Mazda diesel truck. Im a diesel guy all the way but have to say about VW that you either get a real good one or real clunker. There is no middle of the road with them so if you get a good one run it till those wheels fall off. lol

Me too!

I'm a diesel geek.  My first was an '80 VW Rabbit I bought for $150 with a warped head.  I took that thing apart and put it back together and drove it...that was in 1994.  I've loved them ever since.  I got my Beetle TDI new in 2001, just had my 220k service done.  I've been told the ALH engine in my bug is the best modern VW diesel engine...still fewer electronic parts to tear up.  In 2002 I bought an '86 Chevy Silverado with the 6.2L Diesel V8 in it...man I loved that truck.  I drove it for almost 10 years...had it been 4wd I would have just kept it...I could get around 25mpg on the interstate at 75mph.  It would burn anything I put in it.

Diesel is best

Ive been driving diesels since 1983 with the exception of a 1930 Model A and a great little 1969 Opel Kadett wagon theyve all been great cars and trucks. Foreign mostly. Right now I have a 1960 Mercedes 180D I bought in 1983, a 1984 Mazda B2200 Ive owned 14 years I bought in CA, and my 2000 Golf TDI 2dr blk/blk 5spd base model which is a unicorn Ive been told by VW guys. I call the Mk4 Golf TDI with the ALH engine the Mercedes W123 300D's of the VW world they hold up so well so I have to agree with you on their quality. The new ones may surpass that but only time tells that story 10 years from now. Mine has gotten very long in the tooth with 186k hard miles and wrecked twice.
