Well spoke with a well regarded Friedrich repairman and he said based upon the problem described it's probably the condenser. Repair including parts and labour will run $600-$700, so that isn't going to happen anytime soon.
Thankfully the weather has turned quite chilly and hardly likely to hit very high temps anytime soon again as we are near October. This gives one the entire winter and part of spring to find a new unit. Sooner or later these things pop up on CL or elsewhere so will keep my eyes peeled.
