Old GE Fridge

Well, I have purchased the GE fridge along with the Maytag Dutch Oven talked about earlier. The fridge is pristine in appearance and function with one small issue. The gasket is shot on the door. Can gaskets still be found for this or would I have to get a cut to fit kit?

There are universal type seals that would work.

Try Modern Parts in Parma, OH.  They had gaskets for my 1957 GE refrigerator.  It's best to provide them with the model number of your fridge. They might be expensive, though.  Otherwise as Kenny stated above, a universal gasket should work.

 

That's a beautiful fridge and should perform well for you.

Nice fridge. I have a '47 similar, but no interior light (I think).

Is yours missing the meat bin under the freezer, and veggie bins at the bottom?

Must be missing them. Oh well, perhaps I will stumble across some one day. Any idea what year this frig is?

I don't know what year it is, but if you get the model number off it (it would be somewhere on the back or lower front) you might try calling GE customer service and asking them if they know. They are pretty good at such things.

Supco

I believe Supco makes gasket material for these types of refrigerators. It's typically sold by the foot. I work for Cincinnati Appliance Parts and we have a Supco book that lists them.

Let me know if you would like more info on the off chance that Larry at Modern Parts House doesn't have what you need.

That fridge looks just like a '47 a friend of mine had.  It probably isn't much newer or older than that. 

 

Crispers and meat drawer might show up on a similar fridge in not so great shape that's going for cheap or even free on Craigslist. 

 

Rich, is there a special bottom rack that suspends the crispers?  The two lower racks in the subject fridge look alike, and I'm curious about how the crispers and meat drawers would attach.

Mine is very similar, with the glass defrost/meat tray under the freezer. There are runners for one crisper on the right, but alas, I'm without the crisper drawer.

OK, mine does have the light (it's been sitting idle in the garage for a while).

There are two crispers attached to a minimalist framework at the bottom. They have glass tops that function as a lower shelf. One is labeled Vegetables, the other Fruits.

Directly under the freezer is a solid aluminum tray, probably to collect falling ice during defrosting. I think it has a drain hole. Under that is another enameled drawer, labeled "Meats". To the left side of the freezer is a sliding divided basket drawer. Not sure what that is for, but maybe for loose items?

There are also two aluminum divided ice trays in the freezer.

The exterior needs repainting but the interior is in pretty good shape. It runs well and seems to use about 300 KWh/yr.

The aluminum tray with the hole in it sounds like standard fare for this type of fridge.  Our '49 Westy had the same arrangement.  It doubled as the top of the meat drawer.

 

I'm not seeing the framework for crisper or meat drawer runners on Derek's fridge.

I know!!

A lady who has a 48 almost identical to that..IT EVEN HAS THE ORIGINAL LIGHT BULB IN IT!!! has ran all this time and has never been touched!!

The two little holes on the lower front sides of the compartment are where the crisper framework mounts.
